I hold the balloon to my mouth with the sides of my hands to my cheeks to make sure its my lung blowing it up not my cheeks. Not many people do this but its been my method of blowing any balllon I want up for 10 years

Well if you have never blown a balloon like this up by mouth the best suggestion is using a pump. There are hand pumps, power pumps and large floor pumps. As far as by mouth it is practice. Try blowing the balloon up first with a pump then deflate it and reinflate it by mouth. To do it by mouth put a little air into the balloon, then pinch off the balloon about 2-3 inches below the neck, as you blow pull the bottom of the balloon. It should create a bubble in the balloon. After that it is just a matter of lung power.

I use this at birthday parties, I hand the birthday kid a balloon and tell them to have their dad blow it up... Just like you with out a little practice and proper technique most people can't do it...
My suggestion is to get a pump so you can practice making animals... But don't be discouraged keep at it and you will learn to blow them up by mouth! Good Luck!

The good ballons are extra tough to blow up because they are made a bit thicker and can take the abuse of twisting.
I always use a pump. I think it just looks more sanitary (always a plus point foor the parents). Not only does it look professional but who the heck wants a red in the face magician to get magic slobber all over the doggie before it is handed out?

After this try it with your mouth and it will be easier. After awhile you will build it up.

I have had literally hundreds of people ask me how to blow up the 260 balloons.
And I point out that teaching them how to model animals is easy but blowing up the balloons is like a natural knack -- it can't be taught (at least, by me). Like Flourish Dude, I always blow them up by mouth and have been doing so for about 20 years. And, no, I don't get "slobber" all over them! When someone suggests I should use a pump to make it easier, I say that "pumps are for wusses" and I do it by mouth because the kids like it: They line up and say "ask for another balloon; I think the old guy is about ready to croak!" Flourish is probably accurate in saying that if you inflate the balloons by pump first (at home), they are much easier to inflate a second time by mouth. But, if you are doing hundreds, it's a bit of a chore! Having checked with a couple of doctors, there is no "harm" done in blowing up balloons by mouth; it's exactly the same effect as what happens to a jazz horn player -- and Dizzy Gillespie hasn't gone "toes up" after all these years. |

Exactly, Philip; that is another point!
People are impressed when you blow them up by mouth because many of them have tried with the same type of balloons (more than you may think!) and they usually can't do it. |

The way, I learned to blow a balloon up is by first inflating it with a pump, then let all the air out. Now blow the balloon ALL the way up, trying to pop it,let the air out again, blow the balloon ALL The way up, repeat until the balloon pops. Do this for a week, at the end of the week, your balloon muscles will be stronger and you should be able to blow a 260 ballloon up.
Yes, I know it sounds stranges, but it does work. TK |

After this my cheecks hurt and I got dizzy blowing them by mouth but I could do it. A few eeks after it all went away. Peter says he blows by mouth, this is huge coming from someone who worries about the mouth coil as much as he does. Yet he blows by mouth? If Peter does not find this "Gross" well then.... Not saying he is the say all but it does prove a point. It adds to the art or "skill" people who have tried it are impressed that you can do it and they could not.

I do both now. I can still mouth inflate when I want to impress and use the pump just so I don't overdo it.

I can't remember where are what exactly I read but it did say blowing up balloons by mouth can cause health problems long term. I always use a pump. The only problem I have is when I want to make a spiral. I can just about manage to blow up a 260 if I a pre-inflate it. Is it me or are the "jewel tone" colours harder to inflate? Mark |

I always blow using my mouth, unless I'm at a reallly large event where I'm booked to do balloon modelling for 2-3 hours, then I use a Pump, I did have an electric one but it's being redesigned. (Well it will be when I get time to do it) So I have a hand pump as backup.
I agree with Flourish, it does take a bit of the skill away in the punters eyes if you use a pump.

When I work off in the town for the local Okinawan people I draw in a much larger crowd when I blow them up by mouth, plus it is faster than a hand pump. I still use my floor pump when the crowd just gets so big that I am about to go crazy.

For really big events I will pre blow (with a pump) at home. I have had lines of 20-30 kids on I am only working 45 mins. I don't have time to blow. I have them in a pop up graden thing or rub my hand on them and stick them to a wall. The kids have fun picking their own colors. For bithday's I produce all the unblown balloons in a rip apart change bag and pour them into my top hat. The kids pick the color as they come up.
