How dare you call one man's religious icons a thing for sick puppies.
Much better to call them props.

The objects illustrate the transitory nature of human life.

Uh...that's why I said 'Serious'.
Also rather than props even...I would call them Legitimate Historical and Anthropoligical Exhibits. Which they are.

I get surprised there are such strong reactions to these.
These are vajrayana implements yes? As bill said these are reminders of impermanence. They also just happen to be super cool!

Unless they have a documentable strong provinance and chan of custody, so to speak, they are not valuable as archeological or historic items in an academic context. As folk items to a particular sub-culture they may have a different value --
To the magic community -- props.

Chmara: I guess your used to dealing with know nothings, I know I am...but I've been an actual Museum Curator and have dealt with antiquities and ancients for most of my life. I know the difference from a Prop and legitimate exhibits with provinance. I create Props. I also know there are Bizarrists who are serious collectors not just dime store magicians...as well as collectors who scan the Café.
I didn't offer these as Props...nor should they be denegrated so easily as such. The original Catalog listing: Tibet Item: KapalaBuddhaSanskritvailability: 1 Price $950 (Paid but Not what's being asked by my contact.) A contemporary three-piece human skull kapala that is carved with the likeness of Buddha and Sanskrit writing mantra, lined with sterling silver, adorned with silver skulls around edge and inlaid antique/vintage turquoise and coral beads. The workmanship on the silver and inlaid beads is exceptional. These are IMPOSSIBLE to source today!!! Prices have gone up dramatically! Measurements upon request. This is intended for ritual use only and not as a curiosity. It was sourced legally and to the best of our knowledge, is legal in all 50 U.S. states. Please check your state, county and city ordinances before placing an order - you take full responsibility. There are restrictions sending these to MANY countries. We regret we cannot send them when we are aware of any restrictions. Again, if you are ordering this internationally, you are responsible for any all checks to verify that these are allowed. We cannot accept liablity. This is a perfect practice bowl and was sourced from a Monastery in Tibet. All the proper rights and rituals have been performed and this particular Monastery is responsible for performing traditional death rights and sky burials. Today, skulls and other body parts are only utilized upon the wishes of the person. This Kapala is contemporary. Authentic Kapalas are nearly impossible to acquire today. Beware! There are LOTS of fake (resin) ones and ones coming out of China, India and Nepal(where none of the proper rituals have been performed and they just dig up people!!!). A Kapala is a bowl, comprised of the top half of skull, used by Tibetan Buddhist Monks for Tantric rituals in honor of protective deities and as a device representing the destruction of demonic (or human) enemies of the religion. Traditionally it was filled with blood, flesh and other fluids and today these have been replaced by alcohol, tea and cakes made to resemble flesh. It is a reminder of the transient nature of existence. Many Tibetan deities and dignitaries, including several Dharmapala's, Dakinis, and Mahasiddhas, are depicted or described as carrying a cup made from the upper part of a human skull. In some cases they are simply carried, either empty or filled and usually in the left hand; in other cases the deity in question is shown drinking from one that is filled with blood. These variations occur also within Hindu traditions where skull cups are often shown with the deities Durga, Kali, and Shiva; to name but a few. The very word "Kapala, translated a 'bowl', 'vessel', 'begging bowl' and also 'skull' implies already its specific ritualistic function. Kapala (Sanskrit: “skull”), Tibetan thod pa cup made of a human skull, frequently offered by worshipers to the fierce Tantric deities of Hindu India and Buddhist Tibet. In Tibet the skull cup is displayed on the Buddhist altar and is used in ritual to offer to the ferocious dharmapala (“defender of the faith”) divinities either wine, which symbolizes blood, or dough cakes, which are shaped to resemble human eyes, ears, and tongues. Kapala holds the nectar used for performing higher esoteric rituals. It is used during higher tantric meditation in order to achieve a transcendental state of thought and mind within the shortest possible time. It is used to offer liberation to gods and deities to ensure their devotion. In Tibetan Buddhism, the Kapala or Skull Bowl is used ritually in a number of ways. For example, the Lama may use it as an offering bowl on the altar, filled with with wine or blood as a gift to the Yidam Deity or all the Deities in the Mandala. Through the force of the practice of tantric visualizations based in deep philosophical study and meditation, a sort of transubstantiation will occur, and the wine or blood will be transformed into the Wisdom Nectar, a liquid form of the Enlightened Mind of the Deity or all of the Deities in the Celestial Palace of the Mandala. That can then be ritually imbibed by the yogi, or the Lama can choose to share it with members of His Heart Family, as in a Vajrayana Empowerment ceremony. Price $950 (when originally purchased by my contact. Nowehere near the low price being asked. Additional detailed photos & information available upon request. Satisfaction and authenticity Guaranteed.

Doug - thank you for that. I had not bothered to go to the sale --
Yes I am very used to people who will accept trash as treasure and no nothing about authentication and provenance. I am sure you agree that making props brings us into contact with all sorts. Some of our buyers have trouble with the realities that lay between the drama of props and the reality of antiquity. (A line I like to blur on stage -- but not in life.)
