I am looking for suggestions and advice ... I have been wanting to include a levitation in my show for many years, but I am a very large individual (400 lbs.) and I have not found a levitation that can handle that much weight. I am not shy about my size, and reference it humorously during the show, to help set the audience at ease. I currently use a line where I indicate that folks ask if I can levitate, and I tell them "That's not magic, that's a miracle!" To end the show, I want to simply step out on stage for the finale, state, "and now, for a little miracle", float straight up about a foot or two (at least a foot) come back down, take my bow, and walk off clean.
Any suggestions? Oh, and it needs to be relatively portable and relatively silent. Challenge much!?! Grace and Peace, Pastor Timothy Walker http://www.thinairemagic.com |

I'd suggest you check with any of the established illusion builders: Bill Smith, Bill Schmeelk (Wellington), Owen, or closer to you, Abbott's. I'm sure they could help you with something portable. Jim Steinmeyer's new book "Technique and Understanding" also has a levitation effect that could very well be adapted for your presentation. Whatever you do, have it built professionally. It will more than pay for itself with the "talk" it will create among your audiences. As you describe it, it would be a great effect.

I'm all over this...
I am accepting the challenge. I will build a 2-phase Magellan Master Levitation that will allow you to rise over a foot in the air, with little to no stress in accomplishing this, due to a new design that will also be incorporated in units for older magicians and magicians with limited mobility. The effect will appear to be the same as the current unit, but the gimmick will be somewhat heavier and just a bit less of a rise, for the sake of stability and exertion. The unit is completely silent, with no moving parts, and will be able to be transported in regular luggage. Even in a gym bag. Please see http://www.magellanlevitation.com for video of the effect. An objective, comprehensive review at http://crisjohnsontricktalk.blogspot.com/ I will have my fabricators address additional reinforcement issues associated with this extreme weight limit when I meet with them in a couple of days. We have already been tossing around the idea of a Magellan unit in aluminum. Several of the principles used to reinforce the aluminum should translate well to the steel. I will be building the 2-phase unit anyways, whether you decide to get the reinforced one or not. Since you are in the Indianapolis area, you can speak with someone who is familiar with this levitation, and has seen it first hand. If you know Christian and Katalina, give them a call, they're in your neighborhood. Thanks for the opportunity to exercise my engineering ideas and thought processes.
