I'm not too sure where to post this inquiry. Are iPhone Apps (from the various DVD's, websites, etc.) compatible with the new Motorolla DROID phone that Verizon Wireless has released? .

No, totally different operating system. It will be up to the developers to convert to the droid system if they wish to do so

Iphone apps are bought through the app store on iTunes. You can look through it even if you don't have an iphone. So as Joshua said they wont be available on the Droid(Google Android OS phones) unless the developers do so.
Not sure the details on this but because the Google Android OS on the Droid and other Google Android related phones all run on different hardware, as well I believe some of the menu screens are different depending on the maker it may be difficult to make some of the apps run the same on each kind of Android phone but not sure about this. |

The easy way to understand this is that the iPhone and the Android are two different computer systems, like the Mac and the PC are two different systems. You can't run Mac software on a PC, the original software developer needs to do a PC version. Same thing with the iPhone and the Android handsets.

I think he reason why there are so many magic apps for the iPhone and not other systems is because of the App store. It's easier to make money from the apps for the iphone that other systems. Though that will change with Google Android soon I think.

There are less apps for droid phones just because the android os is quite new. not many people have an android phone just because there are not many phones using android as an operating system. but it has a lot of potential if you compare it to apple's iphone. first ... many manufacturers can use android on their phones. so, sony ericsson might have an android phone in the future, or nokia ... samsung already has. the list goes on. iphone ... is not an operating system. it's the phone itself with the branded os. apple doesn't allow other manufacturers to use the iphone os on their phones.
I always thought, apple had a very strange marketing concept. but is seems to work. everybody wants (has) an ipod or iphone although there are many alternatives, some even better and cheaper. afaik apple also makes contracts with developers who create apps for the iphone. that's why there are no free apps. you have to pay for every single app. google's android is much more open, like java on other phones. afaik you can create free apps without paying anything to google or having to put the app into the store. and let's not forget the range ... since every manufacturer may use android as their os ... it can spread very fast. so I just hope the android will become a success ... I don't like apple and their philosophy (and prices!). |

Sorry Adrian you are incorrect. Most of the Apps downloaded from the App store are free. A recent article concerning this puts the number of free downloads around 80% of the 3 billion total. Some have fuller featured versions that cost a nominal amount, between $1 and $3 dollars.
The iPhone OS is an operating system that is simply not licensed to be used on other hardware. It is used on the iPhone and the iPod Touch and is derived from OS X, which is UNIX. The core of the system, Darwin, is open-source, as is UNIX. The Cocoa and Cocoa Touch frameworks which build on this are not open. The Apple IDE is free, is fantastic, and far ahead of Androids. Particularly in the interface building which can be essentially code free. So the barrier to entry in development is very low, and distribution simple. The vertical integration also allows a developer to write an application once - not need to tweak it for many hardware versions. So that argument for many manufacturers has many potential downsides. Is it worth the time to make sure that it works on each hardware configuration? You don't have to like Apple, but the fact is without the iPhone there probably wouldn't be a droid now. Apple raised the bar for smart-phones with transformative innovation when they introduced iPhone. They raised the software distribution bar with the App Store. And as far as cost, compare similarly equipped systems. Own a Mac and run OS X, Linux, and Windows - for the price of one piece of hardware. The iPhone may have areas where it can improve - but the overall experience, which includes the Apps that are available, is excellent, and unmatched by any competitors at this time. (and updates and improvements are just around the corner). Enjoy your droid - and I will enjoy my iPhone. Bob |

Yes as mgclmystrymnthere said there are many many free apps in the app store. The few good magic apps cost money but cheap when you think about it all less than $5.00 US.
Anyone can make an app for the iphone if they know how and submit it to the app store to sell or for free ( doest mean it will get approved though but Apple is getting better at this). Aaron |

Adam, I knew someone would bring that up. I was just using it as an example. For most people that's not an option.

I am steering away from putting a magic app on my iPhone. To paraphrase what's been said previously-- technology is already like magic to the average person. So, if magic happens, the credit goes to the technology, rather than the magician. And it becomes not so much magic, but just a function of the fancy electronics. I don't have the link handy, but recently I was watching a YouTube demonstration of a mind-reading app. The creator / performer had to assure the spectator (and the YouTube audience) that the phone was somehow not able to devine the answer by voice recognition from the spectator. It's too easy for people to give credit to the phone rather than the performer, IMHO.
Now, making a magic theme for my jailbroken phone-- that IS on my list of things to do. - Frank |

If you're talking about a choice between an Apple product and anything else then there really isn't a choice...GO APPLE!!
My favourite Apps for my IPhone are: Crossroads, IForce, Ghostcam, Snapshot. jeff |

Iforce is excellent because it a utility and takes the magic away from the phone so people don't think the phone did it and that's it is just a neat app.

For those of you who are wondering if iForce will be available on other platforms . . .
We are currently working on iForce for the Android OS. This means, soon, you'll be able to run iForce on Nexus One, Droid, and other mobile phones that run the Android OS. Stay tuned, Greg Rostami |
