Right now the best magic trick valus is getting the three sets of Linking Rings from the Dollar Tree. At 2 3/4" diameter they are large enough for Ninja moves but small enough for DragonFly -- and can be palmed! Three bucks plus tax!
With three sets you can for a standard set of 4 rings, plus a linked set of three and another set of four, and an extra single. It is fairly simple to everbend the Key closed and superglue it. With a little cleverness you can swap sets on the fly and leave the audience with a complete set of four at the end. I start with with the two singles tied with silver thread shown linked and the linked pair offered a separate. I then Link the two and hand them out, then unlink the other two and hand them out. On the retrieval I swap in the key and go from there.

For non Americans, what are the "three sets of Linking Rings from the Dollar Tree"?
If I understand properly what they would be, then Jumbo coin routines could also be considered for a phase in the routine.

I think Dollar Tree is the name of a store in his region.

I suspect it is a cheaper version of the Cartier triple linked ring or bracelet (they do both) in pink gold, yellow gold and white gold but probably done in copper, nickel brass or something like it.
It's interesting for me because for several years I've been doing a routine with the same Cartier bracelets (and I posted about it here on the café at least a year ago). When going out I would have my set (steel but gold plated) which I did make a key with one of them and an elastic pull with a magnetic attachment. If I would see a lady wearing one set on her arm, I would ask her to show me "which one she has" (Cartier made only one type actually) and I would say "maybe I an teach you something with them". Then I would simply turn around as for checking and switch in my rings for hers that I would hang in my inner left jacket pocket on a pen sticking out there, and I would say "yeah I think it might be one of these..." turning back to her. Then I would do a short variant of Richard Ross routine allegedly to show her how she can unlink them and relink them. Then I would get the attachment and make them vanish as a joke saying "well take care of them because Cartier doesn't do these any more and the ladies in the know tend to steal them" and then I would simply go to my pocket and give her her triple bracelet back. Then naturally they would ask me to show them how to unlink them and I would simply say "just check at home now you know that it's possible" Even though these are less hype right now, I kept them and Funsway idea to use them as copper silver brass effects is opening new avenues, if only it gave me the idea to use the unlinked rings as Jumbo coins for Jumbo coins routine. Ironic again since a couple of days ago in a thread on coins, I gave a list of references on jumbo coins routines explaining that, personally, I was not keen on Jumbo coins for there is no such things as Jumbo coins in real life. So it's worth communicating as always ("quod non erat demonstrandum")

I was at Hobby Lobby (a craft store) and saw a set of thin metal rings that would be a good size. I haven't gotten them set up yet though...there's a ton of stuff in Hobby Lobby...

John Mullholland's secretary wore a set of linking ring bracelets and he would ask to borrow her bracelets to do a bit of magic.

For clarification -- Dollar tree is a USA national chain in which each item is $1.00 SOme items are real bargains when comared with other stores. They have several Magic trick packets for sale, the only one of interest to me is a set of four Linking Rings with instrucions for a standard effect. I feel that getting several sets will allow you to form additonal sets of 'hand-out' linked sets to enhance the magci of the routine. There size is small enough to allow for coin moves as noted by Etienne, and they could offered as bracelets.
Spellbinder has an eBook on using bracelets in interesting ways, and it is nice to go from Linking Rings to Ring on Rope.

I believe that Fantasma supplies some items (i.e. Svengali decks, Small Magic Sets, etc.) to Greenbriar Corporation (the parent corporation of the Dollar Tree stores) which Dollar Tree sells for $1.00 if you can believe it.
One of these items is the small linking ring set that funsaway mentioned above. |

So I bought 3 sets of these last night at our local Dollar Tree and they were $1 each. They are perfectly usable rings - not perfect, but adequate. The key ring is a little tight, but not something that can't be fixed.
To think I paid much more for Dragonfly rings and even found a set of El Duco Mini Linking Rings on ebay last year that I picked up for much more expense. Of course, both those sets came with good routines too, so it was not a waste. Personally, I'm fascinated with miniature props and these little linking rings that you can perform right at your finger tips have so much potential, I love them. The subtleties are different than larger (even Ninja size ring) sets. And now with 3 complete sets, I can get really stupid. I've NEVER been proficient at the linking rings. Only since they were available in 2" diameters have I become really interested in them. Thanks for the heads up on this Funsway. |

It is also amazing that these little rings don't need steel shims for them to be switched in and out with body gaffs or holdouts. They fit in your sleeves and breast pocket, they Tenkai Palm and Thumb Palm nicely, they can be produced from a card box or hankerchief, tossed into a topit or dropped into a body servante, etc. They don't just link and unlink.
What I'm craving now is a set of rings that are silver dollar size, like the size of the Ellis ring, with ] and key ring so I can fully utilize all the coin manipulation moves and routines: One ring flourish, Rings Across, 3 Fly, ExTROYdinary, Spellbound, etc. PLUS the linking and unlinking. |

Lawrence O,
They did let you know that Dollar Tree is a retail outlet chain here in the USA. The only price is one dollar. From the rings I saw there, they are more substantial than the bracelets you mentioned. (They do not come in colors though.) Being an old cowboy, I equated them to harness rings. The price is right and the opportunities abound. Coin guys should love them. I stumbled into this thread after searching for a better ring to use in the Ring and Ribbon routine by JSB. I discovered a few sources for quality seamless rings 1" - 3" in diameter. In the Tractor Supply store you can purchase solid brass seamless rings for only a couple of dollars. They also have nice solid steel rings, unfortunately the steel rings are zinc plated. Zinc is nasty enough that you do not want to handle it regularly. Even the brass bothers me to a degree because most brass alloys contain lead, but it is still used for many props.
Another source I discovered was marine supply. They have many different seamless steel rings of all sizes. And I reluctantly offer up a final source. Adult stores supply large, shiny beautiful seamless rings that look like something you would get out of a jewelry shop. Yup, you can even get chrome plated brass rings this way. They look fantastic. Just don't ask me what they are used for . As for me, I'm going the marine supply route. |
