Rd 4 : Okayyyyy. A lucky hold against Carlsen is still a hold. Now Nige should get some wins under his belt.
Shirov still winning - fantastic.

Nice to see Shirov at 4-0, but geez Smeets just self-destructed in a strong position.

So Nosher and Magnus fight to a draw.
Great bit from wwww.coruschess.com "Carlsen settled for a draw with white after 47 moves in a Scandinavian against Britain’s Nigel Short. “It was an interesting game,” Short told reporters, “I had absolutely no idea what was going on. The thing was I suspected he would play the Scottish against an Englishman, so I decided to play the Scandinavian against a Norwegian.” Asked if he was satisfied with his half point against the Norwegian boy wonder, Short reacted: “Satisfied? Why should I be satisfied with a draw against a kid? I’m a grandmaster with 25 years of experience!”

Rd 5. So close...but Chucky holds.
Nakamura Carlsen was a good game. Listened to Speelman, he's great. Shirov turning back the years (with a little help from his opponent). He'll start running into the big boys soon. John, that was funny. Nigel is always good for a quote.

Ivanchuk hangin' with an undefeated 4-2 so far, still among the pack at the "Best of the Guys Named Shirov" level.

Kramnik defends what appear to be absolutely impossible positions. Not exciting, but absolutely amazing.

Karkajkin had to wait until Nige to wake up? Kramnik is cracking jokes in the press conferences - this is disturbing...he's gone from dour Kram to Vlad the regaler.

I was very disappointed when Kramnik lost to Anand in the world title battle.
This makes me feel much better. He still has Anand and Shirov to play though but my faith is returning. |

Zeitnot claimed victims this round - Robson walking into a mate in 1 being particularly unfortunate.

Incredible that Carlsen is back in the lead. Usually, once Kramnik has a grip on the lead of a tournament - that's it.
lol@black is ok, btw. I never got that, is it any good?

Magnus did it - great tournament and terrific win.
Magnus went all out, got into some trouble and played very well for the draw. After 34 Kxc1, Rogers said "Carlsen is being super-tricky." Fortune does favour the brave sometimes. "I played some good games and some good parts of the games, but also some lousy chess." Kramnik took an early draw, strange decision. Bit sorry for Shirov though - but with 2 seconds on the clock, you have to take the draw. Nosher's game was hilarious. It looked like something Staunton should have been analysing. Apparently everybody was laughing during the post mortem and other players came around trying to sac more of Nigel's pieces to find a win. I may have lost a bit of sleep, but this was one of the best 'big' tournaments for a long while.

I agree, this was a great tournament. I was more than a bit surprised at how close Magnus came to losing that last game. Ouch.
As for Shirov, even with the funny ending, he has to be happy. Been fun chatting here too. And Linares is only 2 weeks away... John
