I do not have this, but I published an ungimmicked handling version of type of effect that can play exactly as this effect reads (though you'll have to come up with your own method for the prediction inside the case), It may be found in Glemme. I have found that the method I present there works with almost every style of briefcase.

This is what I saw this morning but now is not anymore on the web site..probably they already sell!
This is the description: From the brilliant mind of the late Ted Lesley comes perhaps the perfect opener for The Modern Mental Act -- The Delsey Miracle! Only 10 ever made, Hocus Pocus was extremely fortunate to obtain one of these scarce pieces from a private collection! And now, it could finally be yours! The performer strolls onstage and begins his show by displaying an elegant attaché case, places it on a table, and tells the audience that he purchased this DELSEY case in the morning and keeps all his props inside! The mentalist tries to open the case, but apparently he has “forgotten” the numbers for the combination lock. What to do? He is unable to do his act! A spectator is called onstage to dial any number he/she fancies, but still the case does not open. The performer, unfazed, approaches three members of the audience and asks them to call out any number between one and nine, which he writes on a pad with a felt-tipped pen. Let's assume the spectators have called “3,” “5,” and “7.” The mentalist asks the spectator onstage to dial this number on the combination lock, but AGAIN this does not open the attaché case. Hmmm... The performer explains to the audience that the numbers just called out are very familiar to him, and he asks a lady in the audience to arrange the numbers “3,” “5,” and “7” in any way she so desires. The lady says, for example, “5,” “7,” and “3.” The spectator on stage dials this number and this freely selected number opens the case! But that's not all! Inside the case is a red envelope, which is taken out by the assisting spectator. Inside, it contains the instructions, the guarantee card for the case, and a stapled or sealed card. The sealed card is opened by the spectator himself on stage and read aloud. It says: “THE COMBINATION LOCK OF THIS DELSEY QUALITY PRODUCT WAS PRESET IN THE FACTORY ON THE NUMBERS 5 – 7 – 3. DO NOT FORGET THESE NUMBERS PLEASE!” This routine is absolutely novel and completely unexplainable. The performer is in the audience during the entire presentation. The case itself is manufactured of a high quality original DELSEY attaché case and works mechanically! The effect is a real brain-teaser and you will be remembered for this effect years after performing it for your audience! The mechanics for accomplishing this devastating miracle are so cleverly hidden, that it is impossible to find them! Ted Lesley showed this to some well-known mentalists like Max Maven, Stephen Minch, Larry Becker, and Gerry McCambridge. Each was more than enthusiastic about both the effect and the workmanship! Billy McComb said as he was let into the secret: “This apparatus is of an outstanding quality, which I have not seen since pre-war time! It is sensational.” Comes to you complete with everything needed to perform, including the Delsey Briefcase, fully detailed instructions, PLUS 2 Bonus Routines: Larry Becker's routine is similar to the above with a typical Becker addition! Ulf Borodin's charming routine is used as an encore. The performer states his fee is in the case and it is snapped onto the wrist of a charming lady with a pair of handcuffs “secret service” style. The lady has to use her intuitive abilities to figure out the correct combination, otherwise she gets to keep the fee and the case. You can imagine the scope for both serious presentation or strong comedy! The case is in excellent condition and in perfect working order. You are getting a very exclusive effect that will fit in any corporate, stage or private show. This is NOT a prop for the idly curious but for the serious performer who wants something exclusive to his/her act. There's only one of these babies, and when it's gone, it's gone forever, so act quickly before someone else does!

Patrick Redford's take on this in his "Glemme" is well worth the price of the entire book (although there's many additional gems in there too).

I just aquired this from a private collector in Germany. It is unbelievable. Q from the Bond movies would be proud of this. What incredible workmanship and diabolical thinking. Ted leslie was a genius. What a great piece to start your show and then have the rest of your act inside. Absolutly luv it. Only downside was it didn't come with the full routine, just how it operated. Would like of seen Larry's take on this marvel. Lior, if you or anyone else has those additions, could you please please PM me. Cheers all

Parmenion, I have and will see what he says, so no, not too simple, but have spoken to Lior on this before, which is why I asked. The original also had a routine from the great Borodin.
John, I have Patricks book and have used his idea but while he includes a way of accomplishing this sort of effect, it does not compare to how clean and hands off this is, or the kicker ending. Ted, who like Lior, was a very generous person to speak with. |
