I'm sure the routines will be great. All the Rick's material is a must.

Are the routines more designed to be performed close-up or stage/parlor?

What an incredible work! Rick, thank you so much for sharing this. And so inexpensivley for the amount of practical effects within. But more important than that is your precise analysis of why you are doing what you are doing. These are ideas that even if you never touch an effect, are very valuable. I am very impressed.

I'm holding my laptop to my forehead, trying to absorb this better. The plastic case is not a good conductor, aaaagh!
Rick is a huge mind, and I read all of his material, at least once a year. I haven't finished this yet, but it's up there with the rest. The things he teaches are far more important than the effects. As people, one of the things that defines our species, is the way we tell stories. Everything we do, ties to a story. When we're aware of HOW we tell a story, we improve all the little bits, linking them more cohesively. The audience understands better, what's going on. Because the story is clear, they don't have to make an emotional disconnect, to question what just happened. This is where Rick's mastery rules. Bow! Bow down to Rick!

This is a lot of solid material for a couple of bucks! I think in value vs price, this one's a winner. Rick is starting the new year off strong in the "Best of 2010' contest.
Since these are from his actual acts, the bugs and small stumbling blocks inherent in routines have already been worked thru, and the advice given will save you a lot of time in reaching a nice level of performing perfection. He seems to be really good at this. Another thought: He has several chairs-and-audience member pieces, so if you like that large dynamic in your show (sure makes your show look big), here's multiple good pieces for you to learn, and be able to ring in as you wish. Think repeat shows, audiences, dates, etc. Many thanks, Rick. Well worth the loot.

Can someone give the rundown, item by item? Are there any great one-on-one effects other than the playing card routine?

I just read the description of this ebook and I can tell you that I had the great fortune of being a spectator and a participant for many of these demonstrations. They were AMAZING to experience.
It's not everyday that we, as performers, get to feel that awe that we used to get before we know the secrets. I think that if you are working for a crowd/group of people...they don't get much stronger. Again, I have not purchased this ebook. I watched Rick perform some of these demonstrations at a lecture.

I've only skimmed through it so far, but I can already safely say I'm delighted with my purchase. I have to say Insignificant is a personal favourite already.
Cheers for releasing these notes as an ebook Rick!

I received this a few days ago, gave it a quick look, and then have been working through it in more detail. I've only gotten through the first effect, Group Dynamic. If the rest of the e-book is as solid and thought provoking as this piece, then boy is this a steal! If the rest of the book stinks (and I'm guessing it won't), I would still feel as though I got top value for my money. I've spent more on single effects that have not been as strong as Group Dynamic.
To answer the question of "Are there any great one-on-one effects other than the playing card routine?", my initial glance through the material would lead me to say "no", but I could be wrong. It won't be some time until I get through the rest of the e-book. What I'm thoroughly impressed with is the solid thinking, the emphasis not just on method, but overall effect of the performance, and all of the little details of thought Rick has put into the material. Like I said, just by studying one effect, I learned about routine construction, audience management, and effective presentation techniques, just to name a few things. The value of this e-book to me seems to be much greater than just the effect, although they seem terrific too. |

Just get the notes. They're great!!!!
Here's a kind of list of what's there: Group Dynamics... a cool and easy idea to do a chair routine Leftover Stories... the audience calls out numbers that you write onto a dry erase board. Two volunteers randomly erase the numbers while the board is held upside down... you've predicted what's left on the board. Heads & Tales... the now favorite prediction of a tossed coin only Rick has made it a more pressing need to get it right. And he uses his method that I first saw he lectured with at Mindvention. Body Language... another type of chair routine where you predict who will sit on their chairs and who will stand. Very cool. Subconscious Poker... a poker "tell" demonstration with a borrowed deck. Insignificant... this is a pure mentalism type effect that will scare some because it's not 100%, but it's great to know so you can throw it into your arsenal. Basically, the spectator thinks of one of five cards (or coins, ESP symbols, various items, etc) and the performer will be able to tell what item she is thinking of. Intermission... An Open Prediction effect that I thought was going to need gimmicked cards or a gimmicked deck and it turns out to use regular decks. Very nice. Collect Call.... COLLECT CALL!!! Oh, man, I don't even want to talk about this one since it's so good. Imagine this: The spectators call out various items from a room and these items are written down on index cards... two items per card. The cards are torn in half so that there is one item on each half. You can display everything and show that there truly is a different item on each half. Each half is put into a separate envelope... not a tricked up envelope. The envelopes are really mixed and not marked in any way. Some one calls ANYONE. The person on the line decides which envelopes to toss out and which to keep... NO EQUIVOQUE. In the end you've predicted which item will be kept... no nail writing, PW, post writing, switching of envelopes or half cards. It's that clean! The method is amazing and can be applied to so many other routines. I love this thing!!! Celebrity Impressions... another winner that uses no marking of envelopes, switches, NW, PW... nothing of the regular sort. Basically I kind of Kurotsuke effect. Four celebrities are randomly called out by the audience and written down on four cards. No duplicates. Each celebrity is put into its own envelope and the envelopes are shuffled. No marks on the envelopes. Someone picks one of the celebrities in the group and you are able to find that particular celebrity. Another winner with a method that can be applied to other presentations. My personal favorites are Celebrity Impressions, Collect Call and Body Language, but Insignificant is one that will be in the back of my mind when I need to do something impromptu. greg

Thanks for the nice words everyone. And Greg, after reading your post, I got so excited that I almost ordered the manuscript...then I remembered that I wrote it. Oh well...
Keep the change, Rick Posted: Jan 22, 2010 2:35pm -------------------------------- Just a quick thing... I have received several emails about something in The Road, so I will try to help here...which means I am going to tread very lightly and discuss part of a method, and yet, not expose anything. So here goes... The wax that is discussed on page 32 is merely a suggestion, it is NOT necessary. I have used the method for many years, and I have never needed to add wax. I also have some very important subtleties that come into play with the basic method (ones that are seemingly always overlooked by the others that I see using it), and I will pass them along in the near future. Believe me, they can certainly make a huge difference. I hope that helps. Thanks again everyone...and please feel free to pass along any other questions or comments. Keep the change, Rick |
