Wow. Does anyone know if that was his usual routine, as opposed to something he did for that television spot? Seemed odd that he would show the audience the chicks at the outset, and reveal where he keeps them, and even do the split up front. Still, the effect on the audience was all that you'd expect.

Gali Gali was certainly a great artist at his time, but I have to say that I hate the way he handles the chicken Smile

I don't know if that was his regular, but I would think so. It was shortened because all other's I've seen he had a spectator up and loaded him with chicks.
I think the comic was Jerry Lester and the show Broadway Open House. Remember Dagmar? She was on it. I visited the set for a taping in 1952.

I agree, good thing PETA wasn't invented yet.

Did someone mention one time here on Café that he did indeed smash a few chickens from time to time?

BTW, I had fried chicken for lunch today!

I have read before he was caught flushing chicks following a show.

That's pretty much been known, but in the video clip he denies it.

It was at the Rice Hotel in Houston, 1957, at the IBM Convention that Gali-Gali got caught flushing the baby chicks down the toilet. Actually, he stopped the toilet up, and when the maintenance man came to unstop it, he found the evidence.

Gali-Gali was still in the hotel at the time. He was summarily booted out.

In Texas, we may eat chicken, but we don't drown them first.

That is absolutely unconscionable. I wonder if the clip was filmed prior to that incident?

I have heard of this before. I don't care what people say about him or how highly they think of him, if this is true then in my opinion then he's nothing short of scum.

I can't bear to watch that. I wonder how many birds had their legs broken when he slammed down those monsters on them. Sometimes I'm glad times have changed.

I saw him do his cup routine with chicks ,televised on the WGN Bozo Circus Show. He did it seated at a table and the camera angle was extremely unfortunate in that you could see right up into his hand from a great angle every time he loaded a chick. The chicks were pretty large with legs dangling below his hands and he did not seem to care. One chick was unable to stand and seemed to have an extra leg joint. This was over 30 years ago . Funny what gets burned into memory when we are very young.
The above posted routine was great. Ok , maybe not for the chicks but it was very magically entertianing and skillfull.
Life is too important to take seriously.

Baby chicks have very brittle legs bones, as do most birds.
I know this from experience. I broke a chicks leg when I was a kid, I was trying to make it fly!
Anyway, after I got my spanking (not time out), my mother made a splint and was able to doctor the poor thing up. That chick grew up and became a full grown hen, she lived to be a ripe old chicken. Although with a slight limp.

While watching this Video for the first time I liked the part where he feeds the object, cork I believe, and then pulls the cork out the rear-end of the chick.

It was interesting where he was getting his loads from, something I am seeing for the first time.

I enjoyed that clip, thanks pete.
