Thursday night began with our annual auction to benefit the IBM Endowment Fund. It was our largest auction ever. I worked as a runner and made a few purchases as well. The auction was followed by a lecture by Scott Francis. Assisted by his lovely wife (regrettably I have forgotten her name) they demonstrated many of their "McGyver Magic" inventions. Their reel and card fountain were exceptionally neat.
Friday morning began with Ice McDonald's lecture. Ice is a passionate performer and he conveyed that passion with his thoughtful advice on stage presence, performance and purpose. This was the first time I had seen Ice, and I was told that once you see Ice, you "get" him. I certainly understand that now. He is passionate and likable. I didn't care for his pitch, though. He demonstrated and explained a couple of effects, however he rushed through them. He then told us that his pitch was simply this, if you want lecture notes, he has them - but his wife wants him to give a more high pressure sales pitch. He concluded the lecture with his wife's pitch. I left the lecture admiring this man's passion and spirit, but I didn't buy his lecture notes, although it looked like sales were good. Arthur Trace followed with his lecture. Arthur is a unique and creative individual that never ceases to amaze me with his well thought out presentations. He offered tips on his thought process and taught some valuable sleights. This was one of the top lectures of the weekend. The closeup contest followed, which I missed due to my duties as a host. It looked like a solid group. Next up was Magic Beyond Belief with Sean Paul and Juliane. I had seen their show the second night of production so I was anxious to see what had changed since their opening. After finishing up with the stage contest logistics, I headed over to the theater and got there about 30 min into the show. I was pleased with some of the refinements however, it seems as though they still have some things to work out. I heard lots of comments about some material bordering on blue. Their second sight act is quite good, although the lines used are stock for this type of act. If you have seen Christian and Katalina, then you will recognize the similarities. Duane Laflin shared the show and presented his wonderful silk act and a topsy turvy chair routine that was very nice. I think Duane is as classy of a performer as you will see, however some of the dance steps and movement seemed out of character for him. Overall, the show was good. After a dinner break it was time for the first gala show. Tim Wright opened as Skildini - a nice comedy manipulation act. Tim is so smooth with his manipulations and has honed his act to near perfection. He then served as MC for the evening. Next up was Keith Fields. I was anxious to see him although I new very little about him, and he didn't disappoint - very funny, engaging and talented. He concluded with a funny straitjacket routine and a nice round of applause. Rich Bloch was next. Rich is one of my all time favorites. He has all of the qualities of a great performer and his closing with the flags is hilarious. David Thomas wrapped up the show with his illusion act. Dave had a trailer stolen that contained his show, so he was doing a larger act that he had put together. The Oragami illusion routine that we had seen at MBB was repeated almost to a tee. Back at the theater, it was time for a late night lecture with Eric Buss. I didn't get to see all of his lecture but it seemed to go well. There was a large focus on character development and creativity, which I was glad to see. After the lecture, the VIP party was hosted until the wee hours of the morning. Saturday began with the stage contest. I worked as an assistant, and although we had more participants than originally scheduled, we got through it OK. Next up was Robert Bengal. Bob is low key and extremely professional. He presented sound effects and offered wonderful advice. It had been several years since I had seen Bob, and I am happy to report his is still in top form. A very good lecture. Next up was Keith Fields lecture and dumb me decided that I would take a nap. From everything I have heard that was the one lecture that I didn't want to miss. Keith is a former street worker with CHOPS!!! I was to find this out only too late. @#$^% it! If you have a chance, don't miss this lecture like I did. Nathan Kranzo was next to lecture. I also missed most of this, but from what I hear, he offered many sleights with coins and demo'd his Voodoo Card. All this before lunch! After lunch we were treated to the closeup show. Arthur Trace opened with a great set that included his Miser's Dream and Egg Bag. Very good stuff! Keith Fields followed with a street set. Watching him perform his act made me realize that I had missed the lecture that I probably most wanted to see. Once again, @#$% it! Robert Bengal closed the show with his normal polish and poise. Overall it was an above average show. Guest were then offered to see a free show at The Comedy Barn, or a discounted dinner show at Black Bear Jamboree. I have seen both of these shows before and they are both excellent. We are so appreciative of the support given to us by the Fee/Headrick organization. The Saturday evening show was hosted by Rich Bloch, hands down the best MC in the business, and he didn't disappoint. Steven Bargatze assisted with a bit that was one of the funniest bits I have ever seen. Ice opened the show with his trademark dove act. He was followed by Nathan Kranzo who performed an act that was more suited to parlor. Scott Francis followed with his crazy antics and was very well received. Arthur Trace followed and his Modern Art act brought a well deserved standing ovation. I have seen this act several times and, as always, it was flawless. Eric Buss closed the show with his pogo stick routine followed by his symphony of snakes. The evening concluded with a standing ovation for all of the performers. A great show! One more lecture to go - Rich Bloch. I NEVER miss his lectures as they are always top notch. Bargatze once again made an appearance with Rich and it was great. Steven is a regular at our convention and we are so appreciative to have him make an appearance each year. So the WCM closed with a great lecture. I have been at many of these WCM and I would rate this one as one of the better ones. Many thanks to Fee/Headrick for their support for us and for magic overall. I would also like to thank my brethren of Ring 58. We have a very high standard and once again, our members stepped up to the plate. Congratulations to Kyle Copeland and Tom Vorjahan, the convention chairmen - great job! I would also like to thank all of the magicians that attended for their support. See you next year, and remember, the closeup room is open all night folks... Scott Compton
