Any good books or DVDs on sleeving? I have Bobo's.
Anyone who works with sleeving and the methods that you use? Like the catapult, pumpkin seed, throw, etc.. |

If you're into that, you DEFINITELY need to check out Brian Platt's "Catapult" DVD. Great, doable stuff on there.

I would highly suggest checking out Jim Pace's parallel sleeve vanish. I think it's one of the most natural looking techniques out there. I use it regularly.
I would also suggest coing back and re-reading Dr. E.M. Roberts sleeving technique. It's a pretty powerful tool. So what do you plan on doing with the vanish? If we had a context, we could better assist.

I agree here as to Pace's Parallel Sleeve Vanish, I've done some creative things with that one myself. It is one of the most deceptive vanishes anywhere of this kind that I have seen and used in the real world.
Typically, I would say people learn the Roberts Method in Bobo's as a kid (I did) and it too is a great one once you learn how to do it well and use it effectively. But the Pace Vanish is just a beautiful piece of deception by a brilliant mind in magic. You do it right out front with them looking right at your hands and it's gone! I think when you do it well, nothing's any better. I do it all the time and have made some notable contributions with it.

I love this site; Not an hour before seeing this post I was digging out Bobo to do a little homework on sleeving- which was a result of watching Ammar's Topit video...(gonna do this soon...!)
:magicrabbit: I like the "pumpkin seed" technique; but, my sleeve keeps moving! -A |

Slydini used to suggest holding your arm down with the palm of the hand against the the thigh. Bend the arm at the elbow, bringing the hand up toward chest and turn the hand palm up or palm down(depending on the sleeving technique). Without fail, this will open the sleeve enough to perform just about any sleeving technique in print.

Good point Eric. It should be noted that although Slydini had methods for sleeving, he didn't use it too much in his later years.

Sounds like good advice; although, the problem isn't usually how open the sleeve is (or, at least that's not how I perceive it anyway...); rather, the impact of the coin (silver dollar in this case) upon the inside of the sleeve. Probably more convincing with smaller ballistics! I'll try a half-dollar, too... Thanks, -A |

For some reason, I find silver dollars sleeve even better than halves, perhaps because of the weight. Both work good enough and halves truly are easier to hide in your hands but just an observation.

If you do the pumpkin seed vanish, it has a drawback that is easy to overcome.
Drawback: after the pinching shooting the coin up the sleeve, the thumb and middle fingertips are pinched against one another inside the left palm. When they come out it's a telltale. Solution: initially hold the coin in French Drop position (thumb underneath). Lay the coin flat on the extended left fingers without releasing the right hand grip. Now the left thumb passes over the coin to reach the left middle fingertip. Now the right hand doesn't change position but the left rotates palm towards the performer and down, pushing its thumb (still touching the left middle fingertip)deeper into the right palm. This bring the coin in the perfect position. Do the pinching and, keeping the left hand closed, move the right hand away. This forces the right thumb and middle finger to separate for passing the base of the left thumb. The open right hand moves a bit to the right and stops palm towards the audience as the closed left fist rotates finger down. The right middle finger gently tap the back of the left hand to cause the magic. Both hands open palm towards each other. You just performed Lawrence O's Pumpkin Pinch and if you do it half way decently it looks better than Bobo's variant. An how about this explanation without disclosure? That's not the best part, but...
