I have been using a JOL wallet with an accessory that allows for a triple prediction. Basically, some d**ble writing with a brilliant insert. My question is: Which is better, a triple or quadruple prediction?

The Rule of Three is there for a reason.

But then again, rules are made to be broken, so who can say? What happened if prediction #3 was a miss, rather than a hit -- then the fourth one has some value to it. Or, if #3 seemed to be a miss, or at least ambiguous, but then the 4th one added a new perspective to #3 making both 3 & 4 correct in the end? I think I'm being contrary just to be contrary because I'm avoid some work I have to do tonight that isn't as fun as chatting away on a mentalism forum -- but I still think those are valid scenarios!

A crinkly magic bod at the Leicester Circle once told me that three was the magic number for a reason - it is the smallest number with a beginning, a middle and an end.
That's not to say I wouldn't use four or even more, but three is a good starting place for your development work. Phill

But it seems to me that three is a psychologically "satisfying" number in a narrative, a number big enough to be "meaningful" but not too large so that the story becomes confusing. IMO there is no answer to questions such as that posed by coincard. "Which is best" depends on so many variables -- e.g., performer's persona/style/preference, audience, context, effect, etc., etc. -- that there can be no "right" or "wrong" answer other than "it depends." One might as well ask "Which flavor of ice cream is better, vanilla or chocolate?"

And, btw, there were marketed versions already (at least two I know of) that were quadruple predictions.

I agree with the posts regarding the rule of three. Staging, symmetry, perhaps something ingrained in our wiring and if for no other reason spectators start to loose focus as effects go on too long or there are too many bit of information to keep track of.

I understand the rule/theory of three. The reactions have been stronger when it’s been three. 5 almost seem like homework with a quiz the next morning. I just was unsure if anyone was pulling it off in some way. I really appreciate everyone’s feed back!

Lots of reasons why the rule of three is used

I only contend in some old literature the "rule of two" was very well working...
Something like.... "My friend, my brother I tell you..." or "Your heart, your soul guided you out...", etc. But, yes, this can be a whole other thing, however one of my early teachers called the rule of two "the boomerang effect"... and at the time I understood why... Oh... and for this guy... Everything comes in five! - http://www.yourbusinesschannel.com/show/......innocent And as you are there looking at the previous links, also look at the rule of seven - http://www.insiderreports.com/storypage.......hanID=MR Has the above to do with Annemann's 7 Keys To Baldpate?

Max Malini (apparently) said he didn't like multiple phase routines "If it's good, just do it once and that's enough." (Forgive my terrible paraphrasing)

Yes, but Malini was a devotee of the rule of one!

Actually I would have quoted FOUR rules!!!
But the rule of THREE was taken by YOU first...

FOUR
THREE YOU Three words in caps! This is getting a bit predictable LOL |
Lord Of The Horses Inner circle 5406 Posts |
And yet you seem immune to this since your words in caps are FOUR!
Either that or that rule (as well as the others) is just an over generalization!

They are rules I guess not absolutes. I think for retaiing info three is probably the most effective.
Other rules will have different purposes I expect. |

I think the best mindset in this case (as in so many others) is, when you see the word rule, to mentally inscribe inverted commas around it. That's my 'rule'.

Exactly, Brian... I simply label them as "generalizations"...
