I don't think it is ao much the illusions that are performed but rather the amount of magic we may see. When you are exposed to so much magic you naturally become a little jaded. Performing for magicians is difficult because we see so much. I think any type of magic that we are exposed to over and over becomes a little boring. My personal dislike is card manipulation.

Sometime ago, I wrote an article on this exact subject but also offered reasons why this is the case. I suggested that the top 10 overly performed illusions are:
Origami Interlude Packing Crate Sub Trunk Fire Spiker Suspended Animation Twister Mini Kube Zag Compressed Fire Cage Modern Art You can read my article here: http://backstagebusiness.wordpress.com/2......lusions/ I also suggested a test developed to see if an illusion is over performed: http://backstagebusiness.wordpress.com/2......lusions/ Best, J C

I have to say, I am currently looking for some new illusions because we have performed the ones we have at the same places changing them out each year but at this time we have run out of changes with the existing illusions we have. We do the mini kube zag, sub trunk and Hindu basket, I have been told by many magicians on our kub zag that its about time we saw someone who knows how to perform it in an entertaining manner, and our sub trunk always wows the audience we have taken it out of the show and audience members always ask where is the box illusion that is our favorite, as far as the Hindu basket I have been performing that for many years since my mom bought it for me many years ago for Christmas ...Wow that was a long long time ago. The audiences still love our presentation of the Hindu basket I can remember since way back when our basket routine has always been our own and very different than anyone else I have ever seen perform it. I have to say I don't believe the illusions themselves have been worn out I believe it is all in the presentation of the illusions if your presentation of any of these illusions are a blow you away presentation it makes all the difference in making these illusions a great show stopper for any show.

Yes the illusions may be over done, but the small traveling illusionist need cheapish, effective and little travel space for small theatres etc. the illusions mentioned are perfect for this. I would agree that some-one doing these illusion on a big stage show like Las Vegas should be criticaly punished. Also the arguement is the performance. I think because some of the secrets have be shown on TV, most laymen still go to shows just for the performance even if they know how the illusion is done.

Lets take note that its the magicians that say these illusions are over done not the lay audience.
I will also say that indeed it comes down to presentation NOT the illusion its self. dare I say I get many standing ovaitions for my original snow storm illusion but other magicians say Oh to many magic people perform that well I don't give a rip what most magicians say. they are not the ones booking me. Ok that being said I think part of the problem and maybe its more then just a part and that is the increase in knock off builders! so many out there now offering the big boy toys for pennies on the dollar so any many moe or jack can own a smoke chamber or cube zag. this creates the reason we see so many magicians performing these illusions. again I will say I have myself sevearl unique pieces inthe show and several "standard' sub trunk - spiker- twister but again the audience loves them and that to me is all that really matters. this is not about lack of being original this is about to many sources to get cheap illusions and that is what many of them are cheap! work up an origianl idea surrounding your illusions and you will go far with it and the audience will appreciate it more. just my thoughts sam ps I just saw a big show in atlantic city and was bored out of my mind and could not believe the stuff I saw this person performing but for the most part the audience liked it. again we magicians look at stuff differntly although this show was really blah blah blah! with only a few cool moments.

Chair suspension. I can't stand it.
Also not into spikers really. I would like to see more startling appearances (a la Reza, Copp, etc) anything that doesn't have story or does not tie the audience is usually weak in my book. |

Nobody mention Floating table. Every second magician do it. Even amateurs. Especially now when chinese sell it for 100 bucks.
What a pity, because it is indeed the most neat levitation out there.

Granted Origami is overdone in magician's eyes, but laymen love it, especially since, like the OP said, they don't see many magic shows. So, when they see Origami they are seeing it for the first time. Same with Interlude.
Now an illusion that is overdone in my opinion and one that laymen seem to hate even when seeing it for the first time is the sword basket. I don't care how well you perform this "illusion" it is terrible. Every laymen I talk to hates it. Their biggest gripe is that it is not magical. They tell me they know the person is inside the basket, so what is the magic/deception. I'm sorry, they basket is just one of those things that sets me off. |

In response to a number of different threads, including this one, that discuss the merits of the Sword Basket, I have posted my own personal experience with this illusion. Because the post describes method and variations on method, I have tucked it in the Secret Sessions. You can follow this link to it http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/searc......=6676433

If you are tired of the linking rings and levitations, you should see the most heart-breakingly beautiful female magician I have EVER seen. The elegant, and breath-taking Galina! Take a look:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGdTpHJLNXo&feature=related and here's another version, if you liked that... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACLgzTvB7rk&feature=related And Don Wayne's Floating ball never looked like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7H-nVn2OKGc&feature=related Maybe it's WHO is doing the illusions... Anyone agree? Doug |

Great dancing and background! The problem is she is still seperating and joining rings, nothing really special about the way she is doing it EXCEPT the dancing.
I don't totally disagree with your statement Doug, I think it is how they perform it. I am sure a "headliner" would get a better response than someone just starting out just because of their status, but otherwise I think it is the choreography that makes or breaks an illusion. Tired of seeing the sketch pad and poorly choreographed levitations!

Sorry, folks, if that last one seemed inappropriate. I have a twisted sense of humor, that some find very "tired". Oh, well...no offense intended, for the sensitive ones.
