That's actually a very good point. Although it would be even worse if everyone on the LMT or E forums were happy. 90% of the folks would be dead. Smile

Wow, guys. It is just another tool to help entertain folks. Some people think any visible technology in a performance is not good. Some people believe any playing cards in a mentalism act is not good and hints that it is maybe all just "tricks". We all get to follow our hearts and our heads to entertain people how we see fit... hoping that we actually do entertain them.

As has been said by me about the Spell to Your Card effect ( http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/magic-mar......814?mt=8 ) for the iPhone, "The reaction you get when they spell to their card is amazing."

In both that effect and Richard's Any Card at Any Number, what makes the experience great is the performer and how he takes the tool and builds something with it for his audience. But isn't it that way with all magic and mentalism?

There is a time and place for everything. Would a mentalist ever pull a quarter from someone's ear? I would and do when I have my 3 year old granddaughter in front of me! (She just doesn't get the PCT yet!)

As a professional, you have to know and analyse your audience. A simple puzzle might be just the right thing in certain instances. On my videos, I have thrown in some items that are not heavy duty mentalism, but are just "cool." On 13 Steps I used some "genius" effects that, again, are not really mentalism, but can play great. Even a good "gag" can be MORE effective than a really advanced effect if the timing calls for it. That is where a lot of amateurs really miss the boat. All they think about is the next great feat in their shows and pay no attention to what happens in between. I tell one joke in my show. But that joke is as important to me as my watch routine or my magazine test! You NEED variety and you need to hit all the emotions to have a well balanced show.

A magic app should be consided as just another category to work with. I designed ACAAN for the effect, not to be self-working. Some have complained to me that it is hard to do. That is because they want to treat it as a "junk" effect and think the phone should do all the work. It's because it is NOT that type of effect that makes it different! It takes some practice to get it down, but once you do, it looks impossible that you could have programed anything into the phone. Tom Cutts does it so casually that you would swear all he did was open the app.

Finally, you have to understand what the effect is supposed to look like. You start off by opening the app and handing the phone over. The spectator is SUPPOSED to think that this is no big deal. But then, when the card turns up at the right number, it hits home like, "Hey, that was pretty amazing!"

Again, if this type of thing doesn't appeal to you, then leave it alone. But if you think it might have some merit, get it and work on it and then DO IT for a few people before passing judgement!

During his lecture last year, Michael Ammar did a couple effects with a borrowed iphone. Neither were mentalism--in one, he visibly and audibly ("accidentally") cracked the glass screen and then restored it; in another, he penetrated the iphone to the inside of a balloon...

I-Phones are becoming so ubiquitous, that I suppose it doesn't hurt to use them to perform magic.

I do agree that they aren't ideal for mentalism because people will automatically expect electronic trickery. On the other hand, you always have the phone with you--and people are familiar with them and feel that they are familiar with possible trickery.

I've written predictions on the iphone when demonstrating mentalism and when I didn't have a pen and pad handy... So far, at least in the case of using the phone as a note pad, nobody suspected trickery.

I love everything Richard Osterlind has put out and I'll get the app just for that reason...

I do not have a I-Phone, nor do I want one, and, I will concede, that I see both sides of the disagreement, but Richard has made the linchpin argument in his last post, but I'm afraid it slipped past in the flurry of good advice. The bottom line is while the phone "does the work", it doesn't do the work. That an i-phone can display a chosen card at a chosen number without any apparent manipulation by the performer is far more than an electronic puzzle. The I-phone, for all it's wonder, doesn't know what you're thinking. That, I think, is the hook of this effect. Sounds great.
