Y'know....this is Steve's place....he started it....he owns it....so he can do what he wants to here. HOWEVER....I find an intriguing bit of hypocrisy at play that I just haphazardly mention E-Bay in a post (not my item in any way) a few months ago, and a mod zaps my post quicker than you can say "First bid"....as E-Bay is not an advertiser here on the Café.....but, Steve readily touts Ellusionist's auction......for the Haitian relief effort....hosted where? On E-Bay!

People dread to speak the word E-Bay here....it's become a joke! I find Ellusionist's effort laudable....really, I do. But is E-Bay off limits for some or all? Don't misuderstand....I've read "Animal Farm" and I know that while all animals are equal, some animals are MORE EQUAL than others.

Huge difference between an Ebay auction for charity & not being able to post links to Ebay items.

This place would be nothing but Ebay links if Steves rules were not in place.

You do an auction on Ebay for charity & I bet Steve would let you post it.

Another small difference. When you post a link or reference to ebay in an open post, it's there forever or until someone brings it to our attention which means we have a dead link.

Steve's announcement is in a PM which will go away all by itself in a few days.

The rules state no links or references to ebay in the forums. It doesn't not say references or links in PM's.

There's a notable point...and one well-taken.

The point about the link becoming dead is also an equally valid point.

Another way to deal with it would be to mention that there is something on ebay and to PM you if anyone is interested during the auction period.

Clyde, not quite. The rule says no links or references to ebay or any other auction site. Stating that there is something on ebay is a reference. A few months down the road when the auction is over, we would still have a post referencing the sale.
