I recently learned that both our printer at work and at home use COLOR toner, even when printing black text.
The person responsible for the work printers said she only learned this recently - seemed a nice way to make more $$$ selling toner. Anyway, she said there was a workaround, but is not sure what to do. I have an HP Officejet 6500. Can anyone point me to a source/instructions for causing my printer to use only black toner when printing only black text/materials?

I run an Epson 7600 and it uses a 7 color set-up. I also have to run all colors, all the time, even though I strictly use the machine for Black ink only. The reason being that if the colors aren't run, then the tubes will clog up, necessitating a very expensive fix. I've been told I can run all Black ink in all slots but I haven't bothered. There is no price break for doing so. Granted, none of what I've written helps you. I just felt like typing...

Your printer is an inkjet, not a laser printer. Hp designates those as Laserjets. Toners are used in laser printers, not inkjets. Inkjets use a water based ink.

Chessman, I don't know the workaround, but if you don't print high quality graphics, you may want to refill your ink cartridges at a place like Cartridge World, which can save you a bit of money.

You default your print settings to black and white only, I believe this will not use color

I have an Epson Stylus Photo R220, and in the print window, I can click "Properties", then "advanced" and there is a setting for "black ink only". You can change back whenever you wish, or just click "reset default".

IF you do a lot of printing, it's worth investing in a 'continuous ink' system. They are available for a lot of printer models and will save you a fortune in the mid-long term.

Toner is used in coppiers, and Lazer jet printers. Other types of printers use ink.

As a former copier industry employee (23 yrs as a technician and systems engineer), I can answer this one....
Practically all printers/copiers come defaulted to printing with all four colors. It is called "full color" black. Of course, it is designed to sell ink/toner. The way to change it is Start, Settings, Printers and select the properties for the printer. Change the property to "Black Ink Only" and you are now defaulted to printing with black only. If you want to print a document in color, when you are printing that document change the setting back to color. It will only affect that document. This goes for every instance of a peer-peer printer. If it is a network printer then you can make the changes at the server and affect all instances. I hope this helps!

There will be some evaporation (almost non-existent) but no stoppage. Wiping the head of an inkjet can stop it up, buy inactivity cannot. I would be good money that there is a way to run that printer with black only.

Aside from setting the printer to print in black only, one other approach is to do what I did.
I use my colour inkjet for most of my printing. But then I found myself wanting to print e-books, emails, etc., and I didn't want to use up lots of colour ink, or even regular black ink. So, I bought an inexpensive black and white laser printer as my second printer. It was about $100. It came with a starter cartridge that did 1500 pages. A standard toner cartridge does 2500 pages and is $85. When I use the laser printer, the cost per page is a lot lower. But I don't use it for everything - each printer has it's purpose. I keep both printers hooked to my computer at the same time, and have set the inkjet as the default printer. When I want to print to the laser printer, I just choose to do so when printing the document. - Donald

Anyone with a inkjet or Laser printer should use remanufactured cartridges. I owned a toner cartriodge and printer repair company for 17 years and my cartridges always worked perfect and saved my customersd thousands of $$$.
I would advise trying to find a good LOCAL company, that way if something is wrong with the cartridge you have someone local to deal with. Stay away from internet recyclers, some of them won't replace your cartirdges if something is wrong. To anyone thinking about upgrading thier printer I would recommend HP laserjets for color and black. Ebay is a good place to find quality used printers. I bought a HP 1600 color Laserjet for $50 INCLUDING SHIPPING FROM GERMANY. It works perfect. Several years ago I bought an HP Color Laserjet 4600 for $300 with an extra paper tray, I could have sold it for atleast $600 to my customers. I bought several printers on ebay and sold them to my customers and never had a problem. |
