Hi all. I was hoping that some of you could point me in the right direction with some recommendations.
I would like to concentrate my focus on learning as much as I can about manipulation with silks, balls, candles, canes and doves. I am a big fan of the routines that involve such sequences as turning a glove into a ball, color changing that ball which then turns into a silk and then produces a dove. I feel that this type of magic is very visual and when properly routined, very effective. While I understand this is also an area of magic that takes a lot of creativity, practice and patience, this is the direction in which I would like to move forward. I am looking for advice on books and dvds that focus on this genre of manipulation. I have tried to do my homework before composing this post and here are the resources that I have come up with. Jeff McBride Magic on Stage Jeff McBride World Class Manipulation Levent's Manipulation Act Levent's Ultimate Guide to the Billiard Balls Fantasio Canes and Candles Rice Encyclopedia of Silks What other resources do you fellow magicians suggest? I am looking not only to learn the effects, but also about stage presence and the essentials of such manipulation such as misdirection, stealing body loads, sequencing moves, etc. As for my background, I have been studying/practicing magic as a hobby on and off for the last 15 years. I mostly perform card tricks and other close up stuff, but would like to take the leap to stage manipulation and am willing to invest the time into doing so and would greatly appreciate the opportunity to benefit for the knowledge and experience of some you in this Café. Thanks in advance, Michael |

I would definitely add Lewis Ganson's _Routined Manipulation_ series (three volume: Part I, Part II, and _Routined Manipulation Finale_.) The section in Part II of that series relating to billiard ball manipulation is pretty definitive. I also think the opening chapters of Henry Hay's _Amateur Magician's Handbook_ have a lot to offer in regard to showmanship and presentation. Also consider John Booth's _Forging Ahead in Magic_.
Some of the segués from manipulating one item to another are effective, but be careful that it doesn't appear forced. It's like a medley in singing. Some medleys are arranged so that the last word of one song leads into the first word of the next song, but more often a medley is an arrangement of songs that are connected by themes rather than individual words. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

I would recommend Tim Wrights, Multiplying Balls. Levent refers to Tim's DVD. It is excellent.

Lewis Ganson's Routined Manipulation 3 volume set, There is a pretty sweet billiard ball routine in Steimeyer's "the magic of Alan Wakeling"...and you may have heard this a million times, but you cannot go wrong with the tarbell course in magic books.

Hi Jeffrey,
I think I saw you perform many years ago at an IBM show in Chicago. It was a very beautiful and entertaining Manipulation act with cards, coins and silks.I also remember you producing a champagne bucket with a bottle in it. The music was also a perfect fit. If indeed that was you, you are one of the best manipulators out there and I have seen plenty over the years. Brad |

I am from the Chicago area, so you may have seen me there. In fact, if you saw me do a coin routine, it probably was. I did that very few times but one was for a magic show at good old Mather High.
You may have also seen me at a convention in Grand Rapids. Pretty sure it was an IBM show, I remember Harry Blackstone, Jr MC'd and did the second half of the show. BTW, the champagne bucket/bottle was a gift from Neil Foster. |

Shows you're getting old if you can remember the SAM Convention at the Amway Grand.
How you doing Jeff? Cheers!

Things are ok here. Had a gig new years eve that got me to dust off the old dove act (without the birds, of course)
Right now, I'm busy planning an event for the end of March. I'm booking a room, hiring a photographer and videographer and inviting 15-20 people to a show/dinner. Between courses I'll perform and have video and photos taken for promo purposes. Ultimately, I"m hoping to start working the magic more. We'll see how it goes. How's by you? |
