I have a great new prop that involves 9" silks. The silks that came with it are pretty thin--which is fine--but have static that has them misbehaving! They stick to each other, and to the prop. I tried squirting them with water to no avail. I thought of buying some static guard. I would also be willing to buy more expensive silks--P&A or Rice -- if they would fix the problem. Any suggestions or insight? I would appreciate the benefit of you experienced silk workers!

A thicker silk will help but try this first. Rinse them in water cold with a drop or two of fabric softener. Keep colors separate from each other. This should help.

Static Guard is a major help for stage and silk magicians. There is always a spray can of it in my cases.

Don't just spray the silk. Spray the magician's costume too. We are the ones who drag our feet on the carpet in the Green Room, and then go out on stage and slide down a curtain in our wool coat. We generate the static! The quality or price of the silk has nothing to do with it. Larger (and even heavier) silk just takes a greater charge to lift.

Cold weather is no help. (Watch the problem diminish in warmer weather.)

You will also notice that the worst color for static is the yellow/gold group.

Your brought us a very good and practical question. Thank you. Tuesday night I discussed the same Static Guard solution in a magic meeting containing some pros you would likely recognize. It is a problem we all live with but is very easy to solve.

Enjoy your silk magic.

PS --- Spraying Static Guard on your ironing board cover when ironing silks helps there too.

A dehumidifier will work wonders in the Winter months. Also just try shaking or snapping the silks to get the electrical charge out of them.

I need a humidifier in the winter. It's too dry here.
