That's a good way to do it, if you can collaborate with other entertainers.
Comedy nights have become popular fundraisers around here. You could do the same with a non-profit group, charging a small stipend for each act to defray expenses. You could invite your prospects as well.

Just curious it says that it will be on youtube has any one found this performance?
I also agree with Doc and a few others finding a free spot with real people to try out new material is not a bad thing. I don't do it any more as I just try it out in my shows (after intense practice and refining infront of friends and fellow magicians) any who if any one finds it on you tube let us know sam

Here's a thought about the 10,000 hours of practice theory from Geof McDonald:
"Why did The Beatles get so good? Between 1960 and 1962 The Beatles visited Hamburg five times. During this period they performed over 270 nights. Sometimes they played for up to 8 hours at a time. And, when you’re performing for 8 hours straight you need to find a new way of playing... When they hit it big in 1964, The Beatles had already performed live an estimated 1200 times. Most bands don’t play that many gigs in a lifetime." I charge based on the amount of effort I put into an act. I need 250 shows before it's worth top dollar, that's 5 shows a week FOR A YEAR! Often it takes a combination of paid gigs, free gigs, and several years for an act to be worth what it is. For a new act I seek open mic nights, local fundraisers, magic club shows, parties, lodges, retirement homes and any place I can get stage time with a breathing audience. My actual market never sees these performances. They fly under the radar. I make it back in the fees when it's ready for elite consumption. |

Doc, its a great thought, the 10,000 hour idea
and very appropriate for our industry. Thanks for bringing it up. However, It should be attributed to Malcolm Gladwell in Outliers rather than Geoff McDonald. You probably read it in one of Geoffs amazing Book Wraps, that I mentioned to my newsletter readers some time back. Timothy |
