Just received so I can not comment on the quality of the effects although I suspect will be very good. However, buyers should be aware that several routines (the ones I looked through) require that the box accomodate a shelled coin. I do not think all boxes do this. I know that the Buddha boxes, which I have and believe are A popular style do not. The David Roth boxes, which are pricey, will take a shelled half. Interesting, I thing the expanded Boston boxes like terrible, with the too much brass showing aroung the coin. Mabye Doug can shed some light on this issue, he seem from his posts, like a nice guy.

There are unexpanded shells as well.

Like lorenwade said, there are unexpanded shells as well. One way to go is to get a coin set with an unexpanded shell and shaved down coins; not my personal favorite option but it's there.
Oh, and as you may know already from reading the rest of the book, there are tons of cool effects with boxes that don't require special coins. David Roth has a bunch published. |

I haven't seen the boxes that can take an Exp [ yet, but I can imagine that if it is big enough to accommodate a [, it would have to be a little big for normal size coins.
Is it really that noticeable? Maybe more so for you because you "know" it's bigger but not for spectators? Just thinkin' Thanks! Jim |

Hi Xcath1: As you've pointed out, several routines do require a shell. I thought the Buddha boxes did take a shell? If not, that's too bad, as I do like their design. I know the Johnson boxes do not, however. I have both Roth boxes and the Jim Zee boxes, which do take shells. The Jim Zee boxes are what I consider reasonably priced, and I use them a lot, but I know it's a pain to change simply to accommodate a routine. Regardless, I do hope you enjoy the book.
Sincerely, Doug Brewer |

Thanks for the feedback Doug. I will definitely report back when I have played with everything. I am aware of the Jim Zee boxes as also taking shells.

This is a great book - Doug fried the crowd with some of his routines at our last seminar. you can see Doug on the NYCMS DVD Workers series (vol 11, 12, and 13), and I believe he also performs and explains an Okito Box routine!!
S.E.M. (The Sun, the Moon, and the Earth) is a sun and moon routine unlike any other. Limited to 100 sets, here is the promo:

Scott, that is weird. I just went back and checked again after reading your post. I have the 4 box stainless set and a single brass Boston box that I bought along with a trick from Mike Powers. They definitely do not take the shell. I was not trying to stir a can of worms here. I just remembered when David Roth was plugging his Box set on some DVD he mentioned that "unlike most" boxes his will hold an expanded shell. I of course had to have a set immediately. Like plenty of stuff I buy I don't get as much use of them as I should, maybe now I will

No worms I just thought the Buddhas did take a shell. I used to have a Boston version set aside in my walkaround case exclusively for Chad Long's okito routine, then it disappeared. I really liked the design and it fit the presentation nicely. I've also had my eye on that 4 box set of theirs too. Bummer.

How many routines are in Doug's book, and of those, how many of them require a shell?

Doug,
Great stuff. I'll be picking this up. Been looking for other routines using the 2 copper/1 silver. Just dusted it off a couple of days ago. Thanks for the info. Jim |

I misspoke. I went back and checked my Buddha boxes--I got a bunch of them years ago--and the shell that I was using with them is NOT, in fact, an expanded one.
My bad. Sorry.
