Hi Guys,
Spike-'The Sharpie Edition' is now available and we have posted a clear video for anyone that wants to take a look. Dp http://www.worldmagicshop.com/product_in......_id=5987 A simple game of chance with a four inch spike. Four inches of cold, hard steel ground to a point, and rising vertically from a solid wooden base. Will you drive your open palm down onto it with force? Blindfolded? Take the chance, prove yourself. A life without pain has no meaning. Give your life meaning. Five unmarked wooden blocks are displayed and one four inch steel spike. The performer can have his back turned, be blindfolded, or even leave the room while the spectator places the spike into one block (free choice). The spectator is then instructed to cover all the wooden blocks with Styrofoam cups. The performer walks over to the five cups and instantly smashes his hand on four, leaving the cup with the spike underneath untouched! An incredible feat of mentalism! Ideal for close-up, stage, cabaret, cruises, and other larger venues, this hand-crafted beauty is a versatile magic prop that can be played for comedy or high drama! Whichever way you choose, you will leave your audiences spellbound!

Jim sent me one of the new sharpie gimmicks to use with my spike, it's really good!!
To be honest, I'd much prefer to use this over the Cobra, as while it's a wicked piece of technology, I prefer good old fashioned no risk (ie no electronics!) tools! There is NO WAY that this can fail - It's a simple gimmick, but really great and very effective!! Best, DC

Still an awesome routine...but don't ever say that it can NEVER happen! Christopher

Actually, I was thinking the same thing.
I noticed in the demo that the demonstrators back was turned again for the last two cups. The guy could have switched them at that time and if he did, he would have skewered his hand.
I am getting so tired of slitting the throats of people who say that I am a violent psychopath.

Has anyone determined yet whether the "upgrade" includes two extra bases?
The ad copy certainly implies it, but it'd be better to have it confirmed beforehand. |

Yeah never say never. Glad you missed the major nerves mate. I love spike effects but I have resolved to the one I open with these days. Only two bags and a prediction. Granted the spectator smashes the bag but it is foolproof and I would never let them smash the wrong bag.
This does look very good however. Just after that U Tube video of the smashed hands a while back, I have never been the same.

My supplement arrived today. I like the idea of the odds now being five. I also like the sharpie pen and the fact that it can be used to sign the cups or what ever the heck routine I decide to do.

Just got my sharpie edition and while I agree that nothing is perfect this is as close as it gets. If ever I am unsure, I will be sure to walk away. Better a moment of slight embarassment than a severe injury. That being said, this is an amazing effect. I have performed it twice already and the spectators couldn't sit still! Mentalism + FEAR= good entertainment!

Apart from the distinct possibility of serious injury (there is no such thing as "100% safe" -- just ask Gary Kurtz and the many others who have been injured, some quite seriously, doing various versions of the "spike" effect), I am not the only one to question just how "entertaining" such effects are. Pete McCabe (a highly respected working pro) posted the following to the Genii Forum just a few weeks ago:
"At Magic Live 2009, Luis De Matos gave a talk based on minute-by-minute analysis of TV ratings of several magic performances. One of the more powerful results was than any time any magician did a version of the russian-roulette-impale-your-hand-on-a-spike trick, large numbers of viewers changed the channel, and most did not come back." Just one more factor to consider. Do you really want to turn your audience off -- or would you rather give them an enjoyable and entertaining experience. The choice is yours. Personally I don't think any rational audience member believes that you are actually risking life and limb -- no matter how much you are being paid -- to "entertain" them. Ergo, if you succeed it must simply be "a trick," not a mystery. If you fail and skewer yourself you are an idiot. I don't understand why anyone would think either alternative a wise one. But that's just me.

If any of the Russian Roulette routines are to be questioned as 'turn-offs' and risks to life and limb the same can be said for a huge number of other effects.
Bullet Catch - as performed by many magicians throughout history Upside down Straight jacket escape - as performed by many magicians including Luis de Matos Any 'magician-in-danger' stage illusion as performed by countless stage performers around the world throughout history. What about Lance Burton's Rollercoaster escape, Penn & Teller's Bullet Catch, David Copperfields 'collapsing building' escape (to name one of many 'life and limb' risking effects he has done?) Did audiences perceive them as idiots? I also think that when people see these effects on TV, for the most part they are not live. Hence, the audience is thinking, "Hmmm... the network isn't go to show this if the guy fails and gets badly injured or dies. I didn't read anything about a tragedy on the Internet or in the newspaper to get me to watch it. I guess he succeeds. That's different to seeing a dangerous effect done live on stage. Maybe its the inevitability of the outcome that turns TV viewers off. There are many forms of entertainment and many emotional hooks with which to draw people in. Many magicians simply go for fun because it's the easiest thing to do. Some films re light-hearted but others are made to shock you, scare you, make you cry, make you think about life, make you question your beliefs etc. If effects with an element of danger are presented without any meaning, they are pointless and so, yes, the audience might wonder about their validity. However, there is place in magic for all forms of entertainment. I'd much prefer see something that makes the audience sit up and take notice that says, "Here's something to make you think!" than do a piece of bubble gum for the eyes that simply says, "Look what I can do!". Loads of Russian Roulette performances are in the latter category but at least the effect gives the discerning performer the opportunity to move it into the former.
Creator of iconic magic that you will want to perform.
