Maybe someone has tried this before-
I have a show approaching where I need to shoot a single large ball of fire into the air. It needs to look considerably different than a flashpot, so I was thinking it would be simple enough to build a larger version of a hand-held flash paper gun. I tried it with various lengths and widths of tubing, as well as different ways to load the paper (loosely crumpled, stuffed in tight, etc.) and so far, I have only succeeded in shooting the fire about 1 foot above the tube. Is there something that I'm not doing? If someone can tell me how to shoot the fireball, say, 6 feet up, that would be much appreciated! Phil |

Is this a stationary flashpot, or a hand-held one? The basic principle is to use an ignition of some sort to build up hot gases under pressure, and a ball of flashpaper to block passage of the gases out of the tube, thereby sending it flying and igniting it at the same time. The shooting wand was the only handheld device I know of that was successful at achieving these conditions.

Yes.. that's the secret.. it'll go FAR..
Be aware how far!! and since the quality isn't well checked.. the same or similar sized ball of Flash Cotton won't shoot the same shot every time.. |

Tie a loose net aroud it and teather it with a string so it can't go any higher, otherwise you're in the fireworks business.

I can tell you how to produce any size fireball and take it to any height but unless you are doing it strictly for your own enjoyment and will not be receiving any reimbursement for it, you will need a license from the BATFE. I found this out first hand. I wanted to do a simple binary explosion. For safety sake I contacted the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives). I found that I couldn't do what I wanted to do legally without a license so I got the license. Now, with written permission from the local Fire Marshall, I can do about anything.
So be careful. Info is out there to teach you to do what you want but you can get into big trouble with the feds if you cross a line. Even a binary powder flash, once mixed, is a HIGH explosive and requires a license to detonate it during a show when there is any form of reimbursement. Hope this helps, Clyde |
