First of all apologies if this has been covered before (ive looked but not been able to find anything)
I have managed to buy around 10 bags of qualatex mixed colour balloons of a friend and have sorted them into different colours resulting in lots of darks and not a lot of pinks, oranges, yellows etc. I am wanting to know what everyone else would consider to be the colours most often used in their models. I have recently become very interested in balloon modelling especially the multi balloon models. What would you consider to be a base set of balloons (colours, sizes, shapes etc) to begin with. thanks in advance |

I buy all my colors separately. I go through red, white, black, and pink the quickest followed by lime green. Then light blue, blue, brown, beige, yellow. The slowest moving color for me is dark green. I use clear, teal, powder blue, rose, purple, lavender, grey, and I'm sure I'm missing a few. I mostly use Qualatex 260 standard colors. Those I feel are the most important size. Many twisters use lots of 350s, but I use less just because the balloon apron is so stuffed. Assorted colors of 160s, hearts, and bee bodies round out my apron.

If I'm buying a bag of mixed balloons I prefer to go for the carnival assortment.
A few bags of carnival plus a bag of white, black and pink get you a nice assortment. |

I buy my colors separate also but base everything off what I make. Look at the designs you make, which are the most popular, and stock the most of that color and a lesser amount of the others. My most popular colors are pink, red, black, white, pale blue, green, and orange. I also keep at least 2 bags on hand of every color but like to keep at least 3 of the colors I listed above. To give you an example, during Christmas I did a lot of snowmen, Rudolph and Santa hats so I made sure to stock up on my red white and blush.
Hope that helps |

If you stock up you can then also buy balloons cheaper from somewhere online and not pay such high prices as well.. .50 cents less may not seem like a lot per bag but that could be a 10-20 percent saving on your material cost! I have seen some balloon supply places charging as much as $6 dollars for a single bag of 260's and other places are charging only $4.34 for the exact same bag.

HI,
I agree with magicgeorge - carnival mixed are good at a push. You will find what models you do most off - I do a lot of flowers and aliens so always get extra bags of green. I too order seperate colors, my base collection been green, pink, red, blue, orange, yellow, white, purple. I always have a stock of rounds, hearts, clears, bees, alien heads and mixed 160's. Keep all your darks in a seperate bag - great for spiders and penguins. Vee |

Hey mark, I too use ziploc bags for my balloons, after I separate them by groups I put rubber bands around them and put them in the bag, but I guess velcro would be better... I was actually wondering if some of the belts at homedepot would work better than aprons, everytime I go I feel like I want to buy one but most of them have a million pockets that serve no use to a balloon artist.. the one you have looks perfect though, might check homedepot again, this time for something w big pockets like yours.
thanks for the pictures.

I have about 20 colors in my apron and also buy individual colors. Most used colors are lime, mocha, black, white and pink (for girls, everything is pink).
Other colors are: red, orange, yellow, green ,pale blue, blue, violet, lilac, blush, chocolate, gray, clear, goldenrod, teal, rose plus my one betallatex color deluxe fushia. I could get rid of 3 or 4 of those, but my apron would look empty..... I also have gold, silver, and wintergreen but they are on their way out. I would think that a bag of carnival, a bag of pink and a character assortment would give you the basic colors that you need. Maybe purple violet too. |

None of the assortments make any sense. What is "Carnival" about the Carnival assortment?
The standard assortment is awful. The purple and black are almost indestinguishable in most lighting conditions. The green is hard to tell also. They yellow is almost see thru and breaks often when twisting. I order balloons colors seperately and mix them myself. I don't sort them. I'm a magician/balloon guy. I have a two pocket apron and keep primary colors in one pocket and Grey Scale in the other (white, black, brown, gray). For purple I use Lilac and for green I use Wintergreen. They look great and are easy to identify before blowing up. For yellow I use Goldenrod. It's so obvious to me that you shouldn't have a mixed assortment with a purple and black and green that look almost identical before inflating. How could Qualatex put this our for years and years without seeing this? Who designed this mix? When they introduced Carnival I thought "Ah Finally" but when I checked it out it was no better. Who needs two greens and no pink? It's completely random. |

As far as sizes: 260, 6" heart & 321(bee body)are adequate. If you want to combine sizes for added detail/visual appeal, start with 160 and then add 350 if you want. There are several 5" round prints ranging from Spiderman, eyeballs & Disney Princess you could also choose to have in your bag. If you are asking which shade of colors to choose, I'd suggest staying with the basics and adding in what you find you like/need. I augment the above with having 2 blues, 2 greens, gold, grey & 3 brown tones. There was a time that I bought into the idea of 'needing' every color available (this new blue is perfect for this creation! etc) but I have found much more joy since I simplified and now only use the basic colors. After all, the kid isn't going to know that the Blue's Clues doggie I just made for them would have 'looked better' if I had used robins egg blue instead of pale blue. wes holly |

I also get my balloons by the separate colors. but for a beginner that doesn't want to have the stock most are talking about until they are sure this is something they want to do. the main colors I use can be found in the carnival asst, the character asst and a vibrant asst. I wouldn't worry about shapes and different sizes until you have a good understanding with 260's. then you can add 160's and 350's. then of course hearts and bee bodies I have not gone into 646's yet and still not a lot of use for geo's myself. oh and I only use qualatex balloons
