They predicted it to hit Hawaii around 4 pm EST, and they're still televising scenes of nothing happening and they're still waiting. Could the wave have gotten lost along the way?

Actually, I have a niece who just recently relocated to Hawaii. Sounds like everyone is prepared, and staying off the low ground.

I am thankful that the Tsunami scare did not materalize. It seems that the doomsday sayers were at it again. I just have to throw this in...I wonder if these are the same guys that predict global warming? "Incoming".

Now they are saying it is heading to Japan and Russia and folks there are on alert.

An 8.8 earthquake is nothing to sneeze at. The great quake of San Francisco was between a 7.7 and an 8.3 (the measurements weren't as accurate back then.) The one in Chile was about ten times as powerful. I saw some of the photos from Chile- a multi-story building broke from its foundation, fell over, and split in half. It's amazing that more people weren't killed.

With a quake that strong- better safe than sorry. I'd rather take shelter over a non-event and be on the safe side instead of washed away.

I cannot disagree with that. I know I would have been no where near the shore line if they said it was coming.

However one would think that with all the satalites and aircraft at our disposal they would have know if it was coming and if so how big it was. Again I would think that aircraft could have been dispatached and actually see what is coming. Maybe not. But as you say better safe than sorry.

I believe that earthquakes double in intensity with every whole number. That is to say that a 6 is twice as bad as a 5 and a 7 is twice as bad as a 6. I am not sure about this but I thought I remember reading something to that effect. So if you go to a 9 or 10 it would be unbelievable and probably the worse natural disaster than anyone has ever seen. Using numbers if the damage from an 8 was 4 than a 10 would be 16, 4 times as bad. There is nothing scientific about these numers, just that I believe that is how the damage (shock) goes it keeps on doubling.

It's a little more complicated than that actually. From Wikipedia:

"The energy release of an earthquake, which closely correlates to its destructive power, scales with the 3⁄2 power of the shaking amplitude. Thus, a difference in magnitude of 1.0 is equivalent to a factor of 31.6 ( = (101.0)(3 / 2)) in the energy released; a difference in magnitude of 2.0 is equivalent to a factor of 1000 ( = (102.0)(3 / 2) ) in the energy released."

Further on, it explains that an 8.8 earthquake has a seismic energy release equivalent to 15.8 gigatons of TNT.

On the Richter scale, the strength goes up 10x for each whole number.

Under the more recent Moment Magnitude Scale, "an earthquake one whole number greater has 10 times the amplitude and has approximately 31.6 times more energy".

And for some more comparison, the B83 Nuclear bomb, the most powerful in the US arsenal, has an energy yield of 1.2 megatons. So that makes this earthquake the equivalent of 13000 of these bombs.

All I can say is WOW. The devastation is unbelievable.

I wonder quite often if we will ever see the big one in San Fran., Calif. I hope not.

Few people can properly comprehend a Richter Scale. The idea of a 10 to 1 ratio of magnitude for each number reached is just not something we have any sort of dealings with. The power is incomprehensible. (well by me anyhow)

Suffice as to say that the damage is catastrophic. PEOPLE are hurt, killed and will not be back to 'normal' (for lack of a better term) for possibly decades.

I also found the political jabs and the usual susupects calling names in very bad taste. Grow up is right. People are suffering. Is there a word worse than suffering? Because if there is, that is what is going on.

It is beyond words when things like this happen. I hope we all agree on that.

To be fair Al, your comment was pretty childish and uncalled for. There are situations that call for help, not hate.
