I have just this received this book (from Amazon). I can't even begin to tell you how magnificent it is. I am quite certain that there has never before been any book that visually celebrates the history, mystery and majesty of magic as lavishly and lovingly as this one does.
It is, I should mention, an absolutely massive tome! It feels well over 20 pounds. It is 17 inches tall by 11 inches wide with more than 600 pages of beautifully reproduced prints, posters, paintings, drawings, engravings and photographs. It is published by Taschen (need I say more) and the text is written by a number of well-known magic writers including Jim Steinmeyer and Mike Caveny. It is edited by Noel Daniel, with an introduction by Ricky Jay. The text is rendered in English, French and German. The reason I'm mentioning the book here is because there's a particularly good chapter (by Steinmeyer) that focuses on some interesting historical aspects of Cups and Balls. In addition, there are more than 20 prints of the Cups and Balls down through the ages. What I found particularly interesting was an 1864 photograph that I had never before seen of the great Robert-Houdin performing cups and balls. He is standing behind a traditional X-framed portable table with exceptionally long legs (bringing the table top almost up to his chest!). If there's one book you buy this year, this should be it. The only challenge will be where to keep it. It really is huge, but what a treat! This one is for the ages, believe me. Fortasse Fortasse |

This is, indeed, a wonderful book. I purchased one from amazon, and gave it to a friend of mine for helping me with some computer problems. Then I ordered another one. You really need a strong table to hold this thing up!

Looks like a great book to have, but too expensive at this point. Bill you are either really nice man or crazy to give away an expensive book like that, kind of curious what was wrong with your computer?
Have fun folks, Keith |

The book is quite wonderful. WAY too big for any of my bookshelves. It is a beautiful piece of art.

I keep mine on top of a small table and use it to perform magic on. At 17 pounds, I almost need a stronger table base for it.
