Hi Amira, sorry I didn't realize I didn't get back to you on any emails!
There have been a few classes cancelled during the 10 weeks (we've got 2 left I believe). But we've got no intention of stopping. Luke's work schedule has been much more unpredictable than I had hoped. Not his fault, but obviously not ideal for a live class like this. And yes, there have been a few technical problems (live multi-stream video is NOT easy these days) but we've learned a lot this first time out to sea. Certainly we should have been more communicative (I try to give as many updates as I get!). To be sure, everyone in the class will get the full, 10-hour class on video for their reference. Currently all classes are made available as they're filmed. I think even with some of the difficulties, the class has been a huge success. 10 full classes of insightful lecture from a very thoughtful, intensely opinionated mentalist. We'll be finishing strong this week and the next. Stay tuned! Sorry again for any missed emails. It's actually a pet peeve of mine! I am checking now to see if they got spam filtered. Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone for your support! This has been a great experience. Alvo |

What caused luke to miss two classes? I would expect the instructor to show up to the classroom even if the students do not.

I'm not certain he wants the reason publicized here. Suffice it to say, I sympathize with his excuse. If you're still curious please pm me.

PsiDroid,
Im very confused by what you said, I know Luke has mad some bad mistakes and dose not have a good name on the Café. But how can you say that in this example, because you don't know why Luke missed the classes, it could have been a death in the family or a emergency. Your saying that you've never had something come up, where you had to cancel or delay plans or prior appointments? Obviously its something he doesn't want public or Alvo would of told us why. I am Not trying to pick a fight or anything, but I just think its a little rude that just because of pass mistakes luke has done, you make a remark like that without knowing the reason. Just my thoughts, -k- |

I understand your point but you don't understand mine: like the tale of the shepherd who always cried at wolf for fun and so many times: when the wolf came nobody run to help him and nobody felt compassion for him because he brought his faith to himself: I havent invented that tale myself right ?? I'm just telling it to you to remind you of it: |

No class this week either. It would be nice to be updated by email rather than having to go to the Magic Café forum to here whats going on.
Regardless of Lukes problem - Alvo should have kept the class/customers informed via email or at the VERY VERY LEAST on the day by turning up to the session The understanding was Penguin was handling the business/customer service side of this - this hasnt really been so. To not be informed for 3 weeks is neglect.

Hi guys,
I apologize for the trouble with the last couple sessions of this class #8,#9, #10 (9 and 10 being free "bonus" sessions). I was hoping things would straighten out, but Luke's schedule has been unpredictable. As facilitator of the class, it is absolutely on ME to make sure class happens, and I could do that these last couple weeks. Expect an email from me in the next 24 hours with a solution. If you have any personal or specific questions, please email me: alvo stockman at gmail dot com. Alvo |

Finally, the rest of the classes got canceled "due to Luke's recent lack of internet access"...
Penguin Magic is giving quite a generous compensation. That is nice of course. And knowing Penguin's really great costumer-service, I wouldn't have expected anything else. But I must say I am quite disappointed anyway! After a really interesting start I pretty soon got the feeling, that Luke wasn't really prepared for the classes, showed up when he was in the mood, and lost interest in the whole thing quite fast. I think he is lucky that Penguin Magic has his back this time, otherwise that would have been another dark spot in his reputation. Best, Lexa |

I think Penguin Magic and Luke's relationship may have been terminated---this will further jeopardize Luke in his quest to be successful in this art.
Props to Alvo for making a wrong situation into at least something that isn't horrible...in the end, it's just bad. And that's still not good. Regards, Mike |

As stated, Alvo and Penguin were generous with the compensation, offering a number of options worth more than the value of the remaining classes, along with links to the videos of all but one of the previous classes.
Too bad about the "Internet access" situation, but a lot of worthwhile material came out of this (speaking as a non-mentalist, interested in the overlap of mentalism and magic), and Penguin bent over backwards to keep folks happy. Re: Jermay - I'm not qualified to comment on his skills as a mentalist, but I really like his ability to tweak and combine existing methods for maximum impact, including his card work. His tutorials on the dribble pass, false shuffles and false cuts all contained some really worthwhile material and insights, some of which he stated were his modifications. I've enjoyed some of his written material as well. If he is also mercurial in temperment, he joins a long list of artists and performers in that regard. The gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt sometimes went fishing when he was booked for a paid performance. Musicians such as Charlie Parker and Michael Schenker showed up for work when they felt like it. Of course, that caused problems and didn't help their careers any, but it's interesting how creative performers often seem to exhibit a casual attitude towards commitments and schedules.
Now appearing nightly in my basement.

Creative performers who, unfortunately, will never be able to fulfill their God-given potential. Good old common sense, a hard work ethic, loyalty, integrity, and a committment focus are traits which should be followed, no matter the genius level of the individual.

This won't hurt Luke that much. It's like being a rockstar who didn't go to an autograph session and just continues on his tour. It's not even a drop in the bucket for him. Do I think that this approach is right? No, it's throwing the little people under the bus.

Would Penguin or Alvo do this again with Luke?

In my assessment, no. I would let Alvo answer that question, though.
