I saw this DVD review over at My Lovely Assistant, and I think it's totally off base.
I want to hear your opinions; do you agree or disagree with this review? http://mylovelyassistant.com/reviews/vie......4615d6cc Jeff |

I also think it's way off base. No, not everyone can be Gazzo, but Gazzo can. And he's entertaining. His audience loves him even when they hate him. It takes a very special kind of performer to pull that off. As for final loads being obvious, they usually are to people who really know the cups and balls. Laymen, however, are easily misdirected from the loads. It has nothing to do with camera/no camera.

I don't know who Joe Diamond is, but I do know who Gazzo is...
I saw Gazzo perform this routine when I was just learning magic. I had a passing acquaintance with the C&B's before that, I understood the principles involved and the sleights, but I never experienced it before. I was amazed. Truly, truly amazed. I say, without exaggeration, it was one of the most magical moments of my life. It was certainly one of the most influential performances I ever saw, as I decided right there to really, really bone up on the C&B's and start street performing. As for Gazzo's style: If you want to be entertained by him you will be, if you want to be insulted and offended by it, again, you will be. Mr. Diamonds was of the "I'll be offended" camp; I suppose he'll never enjoy a genuine "2 drink minimum" type comedy club for the very same reasons. I own this DVD and I can say that you will learn the C&B's VERY WELL from watching this. Gazzo drills you. He doesn't assume anything about you or your skill level. He shows you how to do it, then his intermediate student performs it under his tutelage, and then just for good measure a COMPLETE, rank, beginner does it as well, again, under Gazzo's tutelage. And then, as if that wasn't enough, next there is a run-thru of the whole routine on a CONTINUOUS LOOP with MULTIPLE ANGLES, so you can further drill the various phases and how they run together. Oh yeah, he also tips his equipment, how it all fits together, and how to make it. Cheaply. I've never seen a more "practice-and-perform it" oriented DVD in all of The Literature. If you're already rockin' Vernon's routine, then this one won't teach you much about the Ole' Cups and Balls Trick, because you already "know it all", but if you are a beginner, or if you want to start fresh from a completely different perspective, this DVD will be a Revelation. Again, I am not exaggerating when I say that.

Well a review....should be about the whole dvd....not about the first thing that isn't your thing, turning it off. And then tell the world that the dvd is crap.
Second, I learned a lot from the dvd and I like Gazzo, because he knows what he is doing. Third, I agree with you Gaddy |

"This 'routine' is 17 minutes of a man insulting his audience & 3 minutes of the cups & balls performed in a passable way"
It shows he doesn't understand Gazzo's mastery over a crowd. Joe Diamond is only 22 years old. Out of the mouth of babes as they say. Joe Diamond: http://www.diamondcutmagic.com

Gaddy, a "2 drink minimum" type comedy is not exactly my cup of (well, ehm) tea, but I enjoy so much watching the performance section of Gazzo's DVD, and I am so highly entertained, that I would not mind tipping every time without guilt.
The special thing about his explanation is, that Gazzo teaches how to perform with big props for a large audience, this is clearly different from many other routines more suitable for a close-up show. Just my 2 cents. Christof |

I saw Gazzo’s act in Key West. I can attest that the audience was enjoying his performance. He did come off as a little belligerent, but he seemed to be getting away with it. I do agree that some would be put off by his insults. But somehow he keeps the audience entertained and at the end of the night his hat was full of money.

Never heard of Joe Diamond but folks in Key West would talk about Gazzo even if he wasn't in town.

The DVD is about learning a routine for the cups and balls, not necessarily the presentation. If a crowd dislikes your act--they WILL leave. Didn't notice any mass exodus of the audience on the DVD. I've learned a lot from Gazzo, both in person and through books and video. Gazzo is first and foremost an entertainer--that's the key.

Never heard of Joe Diamond. But I've been watching Gazzo ever since I saw him perform at one of the NY Magic Symposium's - the year Dai Vernon was honored.
About two weeks after the symposium, I was in Boston and saw Gazzo perform in Fanuiel Hall. I saw him hat the crowd at the end of his show. He then began another show, got about a third of the way thru his card routine and then it started to sprinkle. He apologized, said he'll be back if it stops raining and then started to pack up. The crowd went up and gave him money. He made more on a partial card routine then I did with a full 20 min set street performing a few years ago. The man is a master of the crowd and the magic he performs. I took his master class and it gave me the insight on what it takes to perform on the street. If you think it's easy...it's not. It's not like having a paid audience come to see you or having a captive audience that you approach at a table. No, you have to make your audience by stopping people because they want to see what you do. I'd like to know if Joe Diamond busks. Based on his profile and his review of Gazzo's DVD, my guess is that he doesn't. If you're looking for slick new moves to fool your magician friends or to win a magic competition, you won't find it on this DVD. It does teach you solid fundamentals for the cups and balls along with his tried and true routine. I have my own modified version of his cups routine that I use on the street and people don't see the "obvious loads." Also, as a busker, I watch the performance pieces over and over and pick up something each time. They in itself are a master class on crowd keeping. In my book, Gazzo is still a god and Joe Diamond is merely a name on a review.

I would advise Mr. Diamond that if he doesn't care for it then he should offer it for sale elsewhere on this site. I take offense at the last line of his review where he says "don't buy this DVD." That seems to me that he's making decisions for others which he has NO right to do. Tell you what, Mr. Diamond, you go out on the streets everyday & make a living like Mr. Gazzo, Then you have earned the right to come out & bi*ch about it, okay? Otherwise zip it! That's me exercising MY right to express MY opinion. Sir Richard.

I can see why someone could see this act in that way!
The guys in allowed his views there are probably a number of people who think that way but don't wana get shot for posting! Magicians can sometimes kiss the magical backside of well know performers, it's just the way it is! Personally gazzo is a master I don't agree with the Dvd as all it has done is to produce a mass of gazzo clones and I feel the art suffers as a result! Every pitch seems to have a clone on it and that is down to this DVD and a lack of originality! Gazzo is a master proven over a lifetime FACT but Gazzo is Gazzo I personally find the hat lines a bit forcefull boardering on rude and guilting but that's how it works I guess! Just my thoughts don't shoot lol |

You can please some people some of the time but not all people all of the time.
As a busker you get the skin of a rhino so one person castigating in print is of no issue. It seems to offend people here far more at a guess than it would offend Gazzo. Bet he`s laughing it off and doing his biz rather than messing about here and taking it onboard. Its always been the same,,,in all walks of life you achieve your own pedestal and become a target to be shot down. Years back I put a notion into print "Magic Mag" On a developement to toppit,,years later a yank discovered it, made it, sold it as his own and made bucks..... so what, I knew the truth,,,so ollicks to it. More recently I went to a lecture where only fifteen people turned up,,,,another lecture where over a hundred people got up and left in the middle of it !!!! You gotta take things as they are in this day and age. I think to understand that real buskers or the majority of them have no fixed abode let alone a pc even if they could use one. Their priority is making enough dosh to get them to the next town or even the next meal. So lets accept it for what it is worth,,,,one mans point of view,,,,thats it. Ken. |

I agree - Most buskers don't have computers. One guy thought he was a great writer (3 people told him so) and was later discovered to be typing his crap from the local library. People like this think they're going to get famous on the Internet - which is perfect because it keeps them off the pitches.
This 22 year old reviewer is whack with no busking experience. I wouldn't be surprised if he was typing on mommy's computer late at night when she heard him and scurried him back to his bed. People are delusional thinking that the Internet is the be all - end all of existance. (Thank you YouTube, home of video for video's sake) Once you transcend the Internet and go back to real life with a real purpose, it's a powerful feeling that few get to experience.

The review is just one person's opinion. He is allowed that and all of the sycophants are allowed to stone the messenger, that is how it works...
I saw Gazzo in Boston a loooong time ago. He held a big Big BIIIIIIG freakin' crowd. The guy knows what he is doing. He made money off of the crowd and he will make money off of those of us who bought or buy the DVD. More power to him. My gripe is not with this review, but the glut of Gazzo wanna be's. Let's all get a life. Gazzo rocks because he IS Gazzo. Love him or hate him...at least they spelled his name correctly! |

I had just read this review prior to seeing this here; I was thinking about starting a thread such as this.
I have the DVD and learned a lot. I liked your line Zoobini: "Once you transcend the Internet and go back to real life with a real purpose, it's a powerful feeling that few get to experience." I think the so called reviewer needs to get that kind of transcendence! Cheers! |

I stumbled on this thread (Hehe, Ron Jaxon tripped over thread. ).
I don't know much about Gazzo. I've read about him but never seen him. Also keep in mind that I've been deaf for 20 years so if a performer isn't visual, I won't get it. But I just wanted to say that I know Joe Diamond. Some stated that he's a young man. That's true. But he's a good performer and a stand up guy. It's rare, at least to me, to find someone his age that has the right attitude toward magic. He admire the legends more then the latest fad. He's not one of those guys that sit around talking about performing. He performs. I can't say if I agree with his review or not because I haven't seen the DVD. But I just wanted to point out that Joe is a good guy and is a "Magician". Not just one of those young wanna be street performers. Ron Jaxon |

Ron,
I'm glad to hear that Joe is a stand up guy. That doesn't necessarily make him right. It seems he was turned off by one performer's style and didn't see what he was really teaching. In his words: "I didn't even make it to the explanation of the routine. There was no need to. " That line alone disqualifies him as a reviewer. He freely admits he didn't even watch the teaching segment.
No trees were killed in the making of this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.
