"No owner or operator of a restaurant in this state (NY) shall use salt in any form in the preparation of any food for consumption by customers of such restaurant, including food prepared to be consumed on the premises of such restaurant or off of such premises," the bill, A. 10129 , states in part. The legislation, which Assemblyman Felix Ortiz , D-Brooklyn, introduced on March 5, would fine restaurants $1,000 for each violation."

I'd take that legislation with a grain of salt.

Are Felix Ortiz and Michael Bloomberg, mayor of New York, nuts? Salt is an essential ingredient in many recipes. If this is put into law, can you imagine the backlash from consumers going into their favorite restaurants and being forced to carry their own salt shakers in with them?

No salt? No baking cornbread (or many other types of cakes and breads.) The sodium is needed to kick start the chemical reaction in the baking powder that makes the bread rise.
It's a nice thought, though. We Americans do eat way too much sodium- and our food industry is only too happy to encourage the habit. Ever notice that the "Hint of Salt" Wheat Thins seem to be the only type not sold in the more economic Family-Sized box? Salt used to be so valuable that Roman soldiers were paid with it. Now it costs more to try and avoid it!
