I'll never forget finding a real tattooed human skin display at a NYC flea market. They wanted $1500 for it.....up walked Blondie and Penn--- Penn showed a great deal of interest in it. I handed it to him and moved on.......I wish I had bought it. I wonder if he did??? They used to remove the tattoos of dead men who were unidentified...in case someone came looking for them.

I've seen some larger scale ones before, these are actually priced great. Just wish the pics were a bit more detailed so I could see them. Thanks for the awesome link though

Todd,
I doubt Penn walked up with the entire band Blondie. I think you meant Debbie Harry. Michael Wilson wanted his skin removed when he died and to have it preserved. Instead, he mother had him cremated. After he died, I tried to get Dick Zigun to set up an urn of ashes as our blow-off at Sideshows by the Seashore. I wanted to put a light on it with a gobo and gel so that there would be a colored pattern on the ashes and we could bill it as the world's only tattooed cremains. Dick passed on the idea. And yes, Penn did buy it. He also has the electric chair proported to be from Sing Sing, but that is another story. |

Well, Mike Wilson's mother might have been mad he tattooed his face? Shamefully I'll admit I'm lacking in many things, including sideshow lore, but do know Pat "Picture Machine" Martniouk tattooed him....One of the fastest tattooers ever, back when that was still a thing to brag about.

I discovered in my office, by mistake, that a bald cap wig left in dry, warm air for a period of time looks a lot like what you would think dried human skin looks like. I though the gaff makers might be able to use that to make something like this.
Also, aren't there antiquated books around bound in human skin? If someone makes gaffs, does that make them a Gaffer?

There are books bound in human skin, and one is right up the hill from me.

Yes, Michael's mom was a devotely religious person who looked upon his tatoos as something akin to devil worship. One strange side note, when Michael dreamt and he saw himself in the dreams, he did not have tatoos.

I think the tattoo work is pretty sub par, too modern also.
It's a cool art piece, but I don't think they make for believable gaffs.

My piercing company trains our apprentices using skin from a pork shoulder. Pig skin is amazingly similar to human skin in its appearance and how it reacts to piercing and tattooing. SOME tattoo shops use this method for training also. If preserved properly, tattooed pigskin could be seriously utilized as gaffed gaff tattoos.
Michaels dream: A looooong time ago I had a dream that my father had two black bars tattooed vertically on his chest. My dad has no ink in real life. FFWD to my sideshow career. One day I get up in the morning and yawn, stretch. I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror. My Nippulini chest tattooes are streching upwards (vertically) and for a moment I saw my father in my face. Right then and there I realized I saw MYSELF in the dream! Some cultures believe themselves to dream of their tattooes even though they have none. They call it keeping their ink on the inside.
