Hi Christian,
Thanks so muhc. I appreciate the kind words. I wanted to give as much detailed advice as I could within an open forum setting. Your explanation makes sense and that certainly will help and also give you more time and also have the focus more on her and away from you. Yes your thinking is correct o9n this. Just practice with it and you will get the correct and proper movement that you need. Yes, agreed that you should not really look at the board or the hook up. It draws too much attention to it. Besides, the audience is to get the impression that the board is simply resting on the two chairs and nothing more. If this is the case, then the people placing the board would not really have to study the board all that much. Glad to be of help my friend. if anyone has any questions, or if I can be of further assistance, simply let me know. Kyle

I've never done the chair suspension.
Only the microphone. But I've seen it performed many times mainly on little kids. I've also seen Jack Gwynne perform a suspension too. So did Harbin's come before or after Jack's? In reference to the basis of suspension in general.

That's a good question. If I was a betting man (and I am), I'd bet that Harbin's walk away suspension pre-dates Gwynne's.
I've got the Harbin book and David Charvet's excellent biography on Jack Gwynne--I'll do a little research and look for an answer. In the meantime, perhaps one of our resident historians (paging Mr. Palmer) can enlighten us. |

I also recall seeing Penn & Teller present this illusion on David Letterman's show. It was very effective. I can remember it vividly. Maybe searching for Penn & Teller + Letterman + Levitation will turn up the clip.

The Harbin book states that Harbin first began performing his walkaway suspension in 1951. So based on that, it appears that Gwynne may have been first in. That said, this may likely be a case of concurrent creation, particularly since each of the suspensions has features unique to it. As an interesting side note, while neither book references the other suspension (i.e., the Gwynne book doesn't reference Harbin's suspension, and vice versa), both books indicate that the subject's suspension may have been the inspiration for Walter Blaney's stepladder suspension. |

I also recall them performing it with Joan Rivers on her short-lived talk show for the (at the time) nascent Fox Broadcasting Company. But I've not been able to find a clip of that in cyberspace, either. Fortunately, the Steve Spill DVD has P&T performing the illusion in its entirety at Magicopolis. |
