Hey does anybody ever used a messenger bag or a camera bag to carry your props/tools around for a walk around situation? My pockets are starting get really full.
Any other suggestions on how to carry around your props/tools without stuffing your pockets is welcomed. - Johnny |

Don't carry so much stuff.
Specialize at each event. Draw out the routine. If my jacket weighs more than 10 lbs I remove some items. J |

At any given moment I carry around a Sharpie marker and that's generally all I need. However, if this is a paid gig, I would have no more than 4 items on my person. You really don't need a lot of stuff.

If you're obsessive, and you just have to carry everything, you could use one of these: http://www.hcmagic.com/ricochet.html
Though not quite as nice, this option's a tenth of the price and will give you a few extra pockets: http://www.mjmmagic.com/store/performers......819.html Definitely best to listen to John and Rob's advice. I find it hard to pare down, though, and when strolling all my pockets are occupied by at least one thing, whether an ESP deck or NW, stylus NW or accompanying special envelope (for that one chance in an evening), PW setup in my right front pocket, golf pencils, pen, Sharpie, peek wallet, IP (for rare skeptics who don't want me to handle the paper they write on), bus. cards, index cards, PK ring, Loops... it adds up quickly. I've never bought an organizer with extra pockets because if I did I'm afraid I'd use them.

BTW, just as a side note that is quite off topic:
Mike Ince played a MAJOR role in my life in magic. When I was a young kid, my parents used to drop me off at the magic shop where Mike worked and he would basically entertain and teach me the craft from nearly open to closing time. He's a heck of a guy and has one of the best coin retention vanishes I've ever witnessed! *tips his hat* -rob |

Has anyone considered that if you need a messenger bag or camera bag to hold the stuff you need for a strolling performance -- especially mentalism -- you should probably reevaluate your choice of material. A deck of cards, a pen or pencil, notepad (preferrably an impression pad), nw or swami and a pendulum and throw in Kranzo's "Diction" book test and you've got enough for 30-40 straight minutes (5 times what you need for "walk-around") and it all fits in your jacket pocket.

I also think that if you need a bag or something to carry all your stuff, then maybe we are thinking to much like a magic guy who needs all their props.
IMHO a mentalist need very little props. I only carry a pendulum, business cards, finger ring, pen, and a swami. These few items will let me work the whole night. I have just started carrying the Deck of Shadows and do readings as well. I remember when I use to do walk around magic gigs. I would be loaded for bear! LOL I find that as a thought stealer I really only need a few items. Few items mixed with NLP, and light hypnosis and readings and away you go! Ray |

Rob, I'm honored you remember me. I'm also a lucky, lucky man to have visited with you from across that magic counter - I had a blast doing it. No job since has given me the same deep satisfaction. You'll find me behind the same counter at least once a month. I've no idea what I'd do were it not for Derek Kennedy and my friends at Magic Etc.
As for my bulging pockets... people tell me to lighten the load, cut the fat, narrow my choices. They don't know I already have. Crazy thing is after loading my pockets, I'll spend half my time with "naked" mentalism and never use anything. OCD is a bear. -Mike

I network at 3 restaurants, 5 times a week.
I carry some change for PK work, a billet pad, PW set up, a NW from time to time, and a few forks in a small "medicine" bag with a few "odd" items from New Orleans for equivoque. I walk around for 2 or 3 hours and work the entire restaurant, including regulars coming in. Anything else I do is a mix of Finley's, Looch's, and few other influences with my style and manner of performance naturally, and usually requires nothing other than my me and them. I would highly recommend touching base with Rome and Looch and picking up some of thier material. If you are looking to down size... However, that was nto what you asked in your orgional post. To answer than, I would point you (reluctantly) to Jerome Finley's T&R manuscript and tell you to have a look at the "Medicine Bag" get some ideas and adapt it.

May I offer a thought about this?
What I do is have my regular case with me which I set off in some corner. I work out of my pockets, but have the option to go over to the case at any time to switch out a few props. I find that, in this way, I can start off with just my basic stuff and see how the gig goes. If I travel around a lot, there is no need to try to keep coming up with different material. The audience is constantly changing. On the other hand, if I get bigger crowds around me, with some following me around to other areas I am working in, I have the option to pick up a few different things from my case for variety. Yes Richard,I agree, and I do similar.
I alway's envied you performers with constantly changing audiences. At my local restaurants, due to many repeat guests,I always have to have some fresh material, and I also recycle material often. My fantasy gig:A resort where all I need is 6-9 working effects...Nirvana. Rich |
