From my own point of view I remember as a 6 year old being afraid of the "Black Panther" who was lurking at our school gates - in fact it was rumour in response to news reports of the group in South Africa in the 70's, and not a local bogey man!

Ripperologists may be intrigued to read of other hysterical cases of attack, such as the Halifax slasher, when the Ripper cases were current. The footnotes in Alan Moore's sublime "From Hell" contain much of the references, and I'm afraid I do not have it to hand.

Anyone else with personal examples of hysteria/urban myth?

I don't know similar examples of mass hysteria but, mh, now that I think...I have a comics story - not an EC but a Warren 'Creepy' - in an anthology about a band of kids chasing an old vampire, who took refuge in a graveyard chapel. They finally succeeded in killing him, and now comes the typical surprise : they were vampires themselves, wanting simply dispose of an annoying "competitor".
Who knows whether the scriptwriter had that fact in his mind...

Dr. Hysteria has recently run rampant here in the states over rumors that the plug will somehow be pulled on Granny.

A true NY Vampire would have been able to get the cash, too! That guy was a foreigner! Probably from some backwoods country like Transylvania.
