I turned it off at first. Then I turned it back on because so many people had commented and watched it all the way through.
Lame. I think (for me) he evoked the wrong kind of fear, with no apparent reason (his explanation sucked) and no dramatic through line. There was nothing particularly dramatic or even interesting about his persona, but his participant seemed very uncomfortable. Why would I want to see that?

Tom is correct. I just showed my wife the clip of the joker and she said the guy was annoying, but he was good! Wow, I must really suck!
Let's face it though...people love to watch train wrecks. This is who we have become as a society. I see these "mentalist" as guys who are trying to get mentalism exciting. It is not the way I would do it...but I would watch the next weeks show to see what they have planned next. That's just from a person watching a tv show, not a performer point of view. As a performer, the things I like, seem to be boring to many. For an example...I can't remember his name and I am sorry for that, but he performed on the phenomenon show in the states. He did a demonstration with pendelums. I thought it was great, but he got voted off after that performance and many that watched the show with me said it was boring. Look how many Russian roullette effects we saw on that show. That seems to be what people want to see. Well gotta go. I am off to the Halloween store for my next gig. Oh ya, gotta stop off and get me a few dobermans too! I think I will do my next performance as leather face! Ya! People love a good chainsaw Russian roulette using their children!

Interesting to read the comments on the actual video page. They all say he is cool! I guess this is the kind of entertainment the Youtube generation wants...

The show became too much of a circus. Are the participants mentalists at all?
It will defiantly give a bad name for our profession. |

You know, upon reflecting on this clip...I actually think he fits the criteria for the next Uri Geller quite nicely actually(!) ;-)
It's T.V land...He'll keep the ratings for the show, create hype and be controversial...it's what a show needs to make people watch... Mentalism, Ha! Producers don't care, never mind about THAT art! Still LOTS more to come...keep watching this space. |

I Just sent a text message to Uri:
"Hi Uri, Just watched the Dutch next Uri Geller. Didn't it become too much of a circus? Hope it goes well... All the best, Roy Zaltsman" Uri Replied: "Hi Roy absolutely not its entertainment! And people love it and I love it! Don't be so serious other wise you will be stuck where you are for ever, learn to reinvent yourself other wise you will become boring and a turn off. I have a little more experience than you so take it in good spirit and move on and make changes! Love Uri" What do you think? |

I thought Uri was something of a mentor to you. Certainly it is frank advice.
I was not keen on the act and the 'hypnosis' was clumsy and bullish. However it fitted with his character. He is most certainly doing mentalism though, I don't think that is up for question. Anthony

The performance was cringeworthy, and the makeup was horrible.
Though the idea behind it is a good one. Doctors used to think I had multiple personality disorder, and so named my other half 'Theo'. Maybe I could have an act which culminates by me "turning" into Theo and doing some very extrodinary mental skills, mnumonics etc. Its an idea. Like all good stories it has its roots in truth, but might be worth considering. If the audience believe they have just seen a person change personalities completely on stage then that certainly makes the performance very memerable. Worth a thought Tom xx

Last week there were 863.000 viewers because it was the first live show, before it didn´t get more than 450.000. But after the first live show there were many complains about the program. I predict that the amount of viewers will only decrease from now on starting today… To be honest most viewers in Holland do like the Joker! But it´s too far from real mentalism that annoys me. Most performers don´t respect their audience helpers, they are to nerves and forget about how to tread your audience helper well. Shacking ladies around and mess with their hair is not a good job for a mentalist. I also hate it when an audience helper is put in real danger like `mentalist´ Fernando does when he is hanging the audience helper above real glass between two poor stands: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZX1fhRPFkM |

You know I was also truly upset by the Jokers routine and the poor woman that helped him. I actually felt a bit sick to my stomach when the clip was finally through. Now that I have watched more clips from the special and understand more of the premise of the show. I am understanding the idea the producers had in mind when they created this thing. Finding out this volunteer was a celebrity judge and signed up knowing what sort of show she would be participating in I am less horrified by his treatment of her. Using the sacrificial cremation and placing a large black/scarf hood over her head to contain her hair there really was little, to no worry that she was in actual DANGER. However I can see how seeing the program 'out of context' could be upsetting as it initially was to me not just by the Jokers behavior but as I watched more I got the jest of program.
It's sometimes easy for folks these days to create a blanket opinion of something or someone by a single entry on the internet and not really seeing the whole picture or what else might really be going on. I know this from personal experience. We live in the days of special effects in movies and television pushing the envelope. This seems to be the gimmick this show rides on. Do yourself a favor and check out some of the other acts "it's sensationalism!" and much better than some of the stuff we see on American television. No, not mentalism in the way many of us were trained but it is a matter of style, Many of us who are older have been trained and influenced by Dunninger, Annemann, Corinda, Kreskin, Banachek and Richard Webester who are well dressed men who epitomized an upper class aura with brilliant minds and well as a genteel approach to the art . David Blaine and Chris Angel took a bit of mentalism in their characters and made it available to the younger crowd with new styles and ways of doing things pushing the limits and extremes and becoming more modern day shamans and street fakirs. This is obviously 'not' what this show is about. I have subscribed to the You-Tube channel so that after I have watched all the previous clips, I can watch this show in almost realtime on my computer because "face it" American television has gotten pretty bad, at times there is literally is nothing to watch. It is fun to see what's happening across the pond and the situations, set-ups and hype that are used even if I can only understand part of what is being said. (I was an exchange student as a kid in Germany and lived right near the Dutch boarder and European television has made leaps and bounds since the time I watched it.) Just for the reason of variety and the sheer weirdness of it all is what makes me want to watch and cringe and after all it's just television. Even our beloved Art of Mentalism needs to grow or it becomes as trivial as all the Box Jumping that still is part of Illusionist shows who even laymen I am around I have heard say "Oh no, not that same **** again" and "No Please, I really don't want to see another card trick." I'd rather see someone try something like this, even if they fail spectacularly, than watch them play it safe.

Wierd...but immensely interesting...havent watched anything like this before.
Is this the next step in mentalism ? Makes me think ...what am I doing with Book tests/Predictions/PK effects ? No comments about spectator maltreatment....i guess the celebrity spectataors knew what they were in for?Even Gellers behaviour with "Mike' was probabaly planned and acted out.... |

I agree with you stpaul. Other then calling the spectator stupid and telling the crowd to shut up...I thought it was worth watching.
Strange how derren brown didn't last long here in the states, but Angel has been on since 2005. Maybe he and they are on to something. Not sure that is who I am, but I can have an open mind and see it. Like I said before...I would tune in the next week to watch. After Callahan left the show here in the states..I was bored and stopped watching. Says something about this art we call mentalism and what we as performers THINK people want to see.

For the first couple of seconds I thought it was going to be cool. The make up, etc seemed very interesting and had a lot of potential. After the first couple of seconds though...
I think that the character, with some story and background, some "theatrical" justifications for what he was doing, and some ethical treatment of spectators, could be wonderful.
