We use hydro electric power, not coal fire produced. I did not appreciate the wall posters I've seen where they are 'demand'ing that the world comply with the agenda they are pushing. If I wanna leave my lights on I am going to.

I'm off to city hall with my telescope to share the wonder of (slightly) darkened skies.

I am in Manitoba, not in Ontario - which is a beautiful province and I hope to visit again soon. I am under the impression we are almost entirely hydro powered. We have an embryonic wind power system but I doubt the technology is able to take any significant market at this point.
Hree, we shut off lights because we are being miserly. |

Wonderful. Maybe they will extend it to a day and then to a week and a month and to a year and so on. Then we could all build pyramids at day and after work contemplate the stars.

It was refrshing to see my skyline darker than usual. It was as dark as Christmas night or Thanksgiving night. Brings attention to the idea of conservation, at least for a few days.

I was in Southern California a couple of weeks ago (San Marcos/Escondido, etc.)
I was quite impressed with the restricted use of public lighting. The streets were only modestly lighted, with ample use of reflectors on the ground. The night sky, while still inferior to rural areas, was considerably better than in most other urban centres. Is this because of the nearby observatory at Mr. Palomar? Or is this just something that these communities are being smart about? John

Probably just because of the observatory. Hard to believe in a smart community.
All commercial properties that are closed at night should not need to have huge signs lighting up the night sky to annoy drivers who can't go in to buy anything anyway. |

An older man died here because of earth hour...dressed in dark clothes, he walked straight in front of a motorcycle just after the streetlights went dark. Ouch.
