I saw a clip of the show on tv the other day. Jamie was holding up vegetables in a class of 20 or so school children, and they were unable to recognise basic vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes, beets, and so on.

Just watched both shows on Hulu, and was fascinated. I found Jamie Oliver to be compelling and I like him.
There does seem to be tons of red tape in the school lunch program, doesn't there? It seems that government is actually getting in the way of people feeding good food to our kids. Carrie |

KFC Double Down. Bacon and cheese between two fried chicken filets.
540 calories, 32 grams of fat and 1,380 milligrams of sodium. Is this a joke? http://www.healthzone.ca/health/dietfitn......kfc-here

This is one of the most disturbing, fascinating, and exhilarating aspects of American culture: on the one hand you have people trying to live like Elvis, and on the other hand you have people who would like to forbid anything unhealthy, unwise, or irregular.
And Jamie Oliver isn't even American! When I visit the States, I go to restaurants and eat some of the most mind bogglingly unhealthy dishes ever thought up in the history of mankind...and portioned the size that would have fed an entire tribe of our hunter gatherer ancestors for an entire week. And it makes me PROUD! But I don't do it every day, and I DESPISE the idea that I should be protected from myself and prevented from doing it. If I can live like Elvis for a day, why not? And if I die like Elvis, I'm just saving money in the socialized health care system which takes care of me. So why not? And in the end, who wouldn't want to live like Elvis in every way? A more perfect example of the American dream has never existed. But today, a bunch of health experts and some British sissy would tell Elvis to live like Pat Boone. (I'm STILL angry about McDonalds changing from ice milk to frozen yoghurt in the late 1980s (or was it the early 1990s?), and about the national campaign by some organization to put pressure on the cinema chains to stop using palm fat for making popcorn.) |

If you do it once in a while, fine.
But if you look at the article, it appears KFC is marketing this to working-class consumers that have less discretionary income to spend on healthy food ... in other words, this is something KFC is hoping that these people might buy several times a month if not several times a week, because it's a "good deal" and lots of food.

Balducci, because they want to live like Elvis.
I'm actually quite serious about this. Go to Tupelo, Mississippi. Don't just go there...live there. Get a house, a job, and meet a partner, and live your life there. What you'll find is that the American Dream has in some ways become FOOD. I get asked regularly, "Why are Americans so fat?" I've probably even talked about this before here at the Café. My joke answer is, "Because they eat too much." But if I'm wearing my official Political Scientist lab coat, I say that it's because the 21st century version of the American Dream is unlimited consumerism, and unlimited consumerism includes a literal consumption of food. Living like Elvis means (again, if I'm wearing my lab coat) giving in to your appetites. And along with appetites for fame and fortune and sex and power, there is literally the appetite to eat what you want rather than what is good for you, and to do it as often as you want. But no one needs me to explain this to them. What needs to be explained is the impulse to restrict people from living like Elvis. Why shouldn't they? Really, why not? So they can live their miserable lives longer? So there will be less wear and tear on the sidewalks? So they can fit more family members into the frame of a family photo? |

I realize that reason seems shallow to some but it's the truth. While they are still free to eat as they please they will continue to eat it, every dang day for every dang meal if they choose, discretionary income, working class, or no. I know a billionare that eats only KFC when it comes to fried chicken. Been doing so since the 60's. Wana know why? Cause it tastes good!

I really doubt that this was the very first time that children said they would eat the "parts". I'm sure just about every time he does this experiment he gets the same reactions no matter where he is be it Here in the States. or England or anywhere else. Just because he said this is the first time it's failed doesn't make it so. I call B.S. There is no way this could have been the first time this has happened to him. I'm sure what you see in the video happens every single time without much of a difference at all.
