I think someone in this thread suggested that a simple card table would do.
Hold on: The first magician I ever saw as a boy performed from a rickety card table and to this day I equate "card table" with "cheap." It occurs to me that a mentalist's props should be simple, but never shabby looking, and it's hard for card tables to NOT look shabby after a few dozen uses. The mentalist's clothes and furnishings should be absolutely sharp and even a little expensive looking, to convey "success" and "wealth" (message: the mentalist doesn't need the money because his powers have made him successful if not flat-out rich; he's performing because it amuses him to, or he likes to meet and entertain people). So, I propose this: the table for the props in a mentalism show should be a sturdy, quality table. It should be a bit antique looking but not garish. It should have nice legs (well, like the mentalist, I suppose!) and be interesting to look at without being distracting. When I perform, I like to "frame" the table and performing space by placing it on a nice-looking Oriental-style carpet to, again, suggest "worldliness" and "richness" and "elegance" and "sophistication." True, it's not always possible to carry a beautiful table and carpet with you to performances; but, depending on the organization who hires you (corporate groups, colleges, bookstores), it's possible to request items fitting this description at the time you're hired. Hmmmm....not crazy about posting this here....too much is revealed in this forum that the public and novices read...but there are tables which will work miracles....they aren't cheap, to say the least.....and when you get right down to it there are ways to accomplish almost the same thing without electronics....without a table even, for that matter, of course....but such a table makes it possible achieve seeming miracles

Greetings to all.
It sounds to me like the problem here is not really the table, but repertoire. If one needs a table, then one would know this by the performance demands of their working reportoire. To me, I think that you need to find material that suits your persona first. Working out a repertoireAROUND a prop (obvious or not) can only meet disaster (Never put all your eggs in one basket.) Peace to all. |

If you are to be performing a small stage show then you could always make the table. it would be such a helpful tool, especially if you do weird or mental magic.
on the other hand i like what i do to appear totally impromptu, it adds to the effect.

This was posted by an ex-magician to magicians, but I feel he would say the same here:
"Whatever you use, remember that diners absolutely love being approached by a magician who sets up a little stand at their table to do his little tricks on. This is a treat that can only be topped by then performing rope magic for them ('the hero' hates rope magic, it makes him wont to vomit angrely). Please, if you have any love for the art, avoid those naff little cases, along with neckties showing playing cards, and patronizing bad jokes. Spend the money on having a tailor sew some extra pockets inside your jacket and keep what you need there, leaving the rest at home along with the plastic guillotine and sponge balls." --posted by "The Hero" some time ago
