Paul,
Consider Whit Haydn's act: Rings, rope, silk, newspaper. Very standard stuff. He just does it his own way, complete with callbacks, running gags, a theme, a character, etc. All with a simple plot. Whatever you decide to use, start doing them in your kids type show until you do them brilliantly; with funny, entertaining bits, lines, gags that you came up with. Find a place where you can perform "like" a busker outdoors all summer long. Do those routines. Find out what it takes to make them entertaining. After a long season of constantly performing these routines (a couple hundred times each in front of strangers) you'll have something you'll be confident with. A flood of effects never does anyone any good. The ones that are not crap are only good because the magician doing them put his personality into them and they wouldn't be anything like what you'd get in the box anyway. I could tell you to do silk/tt. What good does that do you? it's 30 seconds long, everybody knows it, no funny lines in the vernet package, doesn't involve the entire audience much, hard to see the trick on a big stage, kinda boring. On the other hand, there are probably at least a dozen performers here at the Café that do a hilarious 5 minute version professionally with ideas you'd never thought of, and it becomes a highlight of their act. And, please skip the kiddy crap in your kids show a.s.a.p. Start bringing in your new good stuff one trick at a time and get rid of the kiddy tricks. Soon your act will just be an "act" and will no longer be a "kiddy show". Once your act is just an "act" you'll get a lot more play time with it, it will get better faster, and will play to any audience, and hence, more often. And you'll get paid more. The biggest myth in magic is that kids need a "kiddy show". They do not. They need an entertaining show. Be entertaining. It can be a "kiddy show" but it does not need to be. Do good magic. Once you get there everyone will like it. Kids, adults, old folks, teens. It won't matter. You can always toss in a "kiddy trick" for the birthday kid if/when it makes sense.

If I were you I would take Franks advise seriously, because he recently had several very sucessful theater gigs for a packed house of paying adults. Robert Blake is a popular Dutch street performer that really knows his stuff.

Here is my routines that I perform for teens:
Growing/shrinking head opener Half Dyed hank Comedy card on back AND Tricky Bottles with the same volunteer John Cornelius Burnt Bill Routine followed with Bill in sealed envelope in wallet One of Tabary's Rope Routines (Very Strong) Mugged by Rich Marrotta Lasso Card trick Viper Disecto and I close with the Slow Motion paper tear by Ron Wilson That is a routine I actually perform, in order, when invited to perform for teens. A lot of it is straight from my adult show. Hope that gives you some ideas, but you have to remember, what works for me may not work for you. These routines are highly polished over years of performing and include lots of one-liners and bits of business. It works for me!

Thanks all!
Tommy J I just ordered Rich Marotta's dvd before you posted. I wanted to see the mugged routine and lasso effect. The fact you use them makes me glad I ordered it. Maybe I'll find some other material on the dvd as well. John and Seadog93 I totally agree with mentalism being a great idea for teens. I just didn't want my entire show to be mentalism so I thought I would ask for some ideas. I have the impressionable mindboard and a few other routines that I do for mentalism. Thanks again to all for the suggestions.

No, but the challenge I have put on myself has caused some interesting creativity in developing my shows. Wolly

Your right on the money with drop the kiddie act. I cringe now whenever I see those old time supreme kids magic tricks like balloon head and dippy duck. They signify what is bad about the kids magician image. Cheap looking props that don't entertain.
You are the artists, and you are what that audience came to see. Not your latest purchase. Make sure you entertain with personality and then bring in the props. This means doing better magic with more sleights. It isn’t as easy, but it makes for a far better show which all ages can enjoy and not just the really young. |

Nobody's mentioned it yet, but I always like to throw in a bit of "geek" with teen shows- needle swallowing, fire- eating, mental floss with a 260 balloon, Ramsay's 4 Little Beans, etc. It helps to grind off the "too cool for the room" attitudes.

It doesn't matter what tricks you do as long as you do them well. What is important is having the ability to entertain people with whatever you do. I do teen shows all the time and half my act can be found in Tarbell.
If you are looking for complete scripted routines with performing rights for a show in a box type of deal sure... Bill Abbott's five card opener Steve Spills mind reading goose Whit Haydn's mongolian pop knot Steve Spills needles from mouth Bruce Kalver's knock knock flea circus Whit Haydn's ring routine Billy McComb's vanishing birdcage All told that's a 45 minute show that anyone with a modicum of talent could kill with. You could do the tricks in the order they are written and it is a turn key act. You'd be into the show for about four grand (If you can find somebody to sell you the McComb cage). But really, I don't know why anybody would want to do that. All you'd be doing is everybody else's greatest hits. There are not a whole lot of 'turn key' routines out there that are any good. These are in my opinion some of the best and entertaining to any audience over the age of 10 when done properly. BUT the most important thing any entertainer has to sell to their client is themselves. If you do the hard work and find your own way you will have something that you can use for a lifetime. there are no short cuts to having a great act other than doing A LOT of really hard work. Asking people what kind of tricks a person should do to me is like asking them what kind of a girl/guy they should marry. The stuff in YOUR show should reflect YOU. That's just my 2p. I think arm chopper routines go over well with teens. Many say that mmentalism works well, but I am not a mentalist, so I don't know how true that is. I agree with what has been said about the classics, and about most effects that work for adults should work for teens. One bit of advice: A whole lot depends upon the way the effect is presented. Presentation is probably more important than the effect itself.

The Hand chopper, Daggers through head, and visible sawing through body, all work great for me. I present then with an element of danger.

Check out Docc Hilford's New Cinderella Act if you're into mentalism. I took advantage of his lecture special and got it free with purchase of the Serpent Wallet. I'm very pleased with both items!

Ventman is correct. The Cinnderella Act is a killer way to make gobs of money from teen parties. But they are PARTICULAR kinds of parties. No trick/act works for everybody!
It's my experience that building a new act is, in fact, creating a product. And in product development the most important factor is the market to whom it will be sold. The confusing point in your initial question is the fact that "teens" are not a market. It's a qualifying component of the market, but where they'll be, why they're there, and a dozen other questions determine the market. For example, consider the difference between a room full of teem boys at a summer camp vs. a tennis court of upper class girls having a birthday party, vs. a spoiled boy's barmitzva, vs. a hospital setting. Age is one very small factor in determining your product. The tricks are probably the LAST thing you need to worry about. Mentalism is great for CERTAIN teen markets. Bunny tricks are better in others. I always look for the right market, rather than hope to be booked because I have the "right" tricks. No one would decide to start a recreational business and begin purchasing the "right" jet skis, only to find that they're nowhere near a beach and the clients can't swim! Well, maybe magicians would. We seem to think the trick , or how we present it, is KING. The KING is dead, Docc |

For teens six card repeat leading to cards across works well for me. Mentalism kills. And I always swallow a balloon. They're an easy crowd if you hit them the right way.
