I thought a running thread on apps for use by mentalists might be useful. This isn't intended to be a discussion of the pros and cons of the iPad or the decision to even use such a device. Rather, for those of us who have decided to use this as part of our performances, it would be nice to have one place where we can all post our practical-use discoveries.
I can tell you that I have all of the following apps and they all work and can easily be applied for mentalism (given the proper context). In other words, "why are you using a tablet?" I got the iPad primarily for use with iForce and the Invisible Deck. iForce (Doodle) - In my opinion, this program makes the iPad worth its weight in gold. It is my understanding the developers are already hard at work making a dedicated iPad version. In the meantime, the iPhone/iTouch version in "2x" mode runs just fine and looks great. Free Will Pendulum - Runs perfectly on the iPad. However, I think this should be relegated to the iPhone/iTouch simply for practical purposes. Which Day - Perfect for your day of the week memory routine. FortuneBall - The classic 8-ball oracle. However, you can edit the answers that are shown! Imagine the possibilities. Toss dem' Bones - Mystic Bone Reader. For those who want to have some fun with bone castings. CalmCandle - Perfect for induction techniques or setting the mood. Flip It! Lite - With a little ingenuity, you can create your own revelation with this animation program. Invisible Deck (by Ellusionist) - Beside, iForce, this was the other program that caused me to get the iPad. I actually performed this today with the iPad with terrific reactions. The programs I just listed were originally designed for use on the iPhone/iTouch. Here are a few that I have obtained strictly for iPad use: Spirit Board - An electronic Ouija board. Motion X-Zen - This is a stunning dice generator/program. It has options for using dice to read Tarot cards, ESP symbols, Yes/No questions, etc. Board - This is essentially a corkboard that allows you to post your own notes, photos, symbols, etc. A nice way for a reveal or prediction to be shown. The beauty of the iPad over the iPhone/iTouch is that this can now be used for stage and large group settings. Just some thoughts. Enjoy. - Scott |

Great post Scott. Just purchased an iPod Touch and was looking for some worthwhile apps. Found everything except Free Will Pendulum & Board. Any chance you can post links? Thanks.

Board, to my knowledge, is only for the iPad.
Free Will Pendulum has apparently been renamed "Pendulum Oracle" and is no longer free. It is available for the iTouch. Enjoy. |

Just bought Invisible Deck and like it but I still prefer iCardPredict which doesn't use the ID premise. The effect, at least to my eye, is simpler and more direct.
Hadn't heard of iForce before. Wow, that's a fantastic tool! The most important element with all of these apps is to make them as invisible as possible. Use them as a prop, not as the focal point of the effect.

Digital Photo Frame HD has now been updated to fix a prior bug. It is now useable and elegantly handles photos/images. For those who do readings, you can place images of your favorite oracle in a folder and then manipulate them on the screen much as you would a normal desktop. Enjoy.

While not free any longer, you might be interested in ABCNotes for the iPad. It allows you to create Post-It type notes. The important thing is that there are 6 different screens/workspaces that can be created and immediately accessed with your thumb while the iPad is held facing you.
Just another thought. Enjoy. |

Others have posted about the Fake ESP app for the iPhone/iTouch, but it works quite well on the iPad, as well. In fact, I think the trigger for the various symbols is a little more logically placed when the iPad is used.
It's a free app that allows you to determine which ESP symbol will be shown when the iPad is turned face up. Think of it as a poor man's iForce. As opposed to iForce, these symbols are pre-printed and don't appear handwritten. |

Okay, here's another one for those of you who are into hypnosis/suggestion.
imMatch Also, check out Sundry Notes. Both apps are free. |

Metronome is available free for a short time on the iTunes app store for those of you who might want to explore an induction tool.

I find that ADOBE IDEAS, a free sketchpad App, works wonderfully in design duplications. I store dozens of the most common drawings in its memory. A tap of the finger instantly hides the memory and transfers any desired drawing to the sketchpad.

For those doing the Day of the Week For Any Date Feat, you can use YearViewer for iPad to prove you got the date right.
Some people, I've found, believe the app is specially designed to give whatever day of the week you want. However, these people also make it a point to verify that date independently, thus causing them to think about you and your act longer, and being more impressed with it, since you're giving the actual correct day of the week! |

Have any of you used "card guru"? Looks like it's gotten some good reviews, and I like the idea that the magician makes the big reveal, not the iPad.

A digital FREE version of The Princess Card Trick is available today. It's called "Magic Princess." It looks "okay" on the iPad but was developed for the iPhone/iTouch smaller screen. Nonetheless, something to play with.
For you "readers" out there, you might enjoy, "Sage." Another free app. Just some thoughts. Enjoy. |

Scott, your mention of Recorder HD being free brings a bit of advice to mind.
Check out appshopper ( http://appshopper.com/ ). After you sign up for a free account, you can keep track of both apps you want (wish list) and apps you've purchased. You could start your wish list with the apps Scott lists above. The benefit of this is that the site will automatically send you e-mails notifying you of price drops on wish list items or updates of purchased items. It's very handy for keeping your app expenditures to a minimum. |
