Wierd question time.
I'm looking for a way to incorporate a rabbit into a mentalism routine. I've acquired a very realistic looking rabbit. (don't know how ethical it is but it's made from real rabbit fur.) I would like to somehow involve it in an effect (I don't take myself too seriously as you can guess) I'm quite happy to play the idiot while the rabbit is the star. A couple of points. It's not really feasable to put a hand inside the rabbit (there are some sharp wire hoops in there.) I'm not a vent Any suggestions willingly considerered Steve |

Perhaps the use of a rabbit associates what you would be doing too closely to magic.

Is the rabbit Rocky Raccoon-esque - does it move with your help? Or is it essentially a stuffed animal toy that just sits there?
If it "moves," it can make a selection from a number of envelopes or boxes or whatever. If not, it could be placed (by a spectator?) on an envelope or box or whatever. :carrot: |

I agree I have to avoid magic associations. rgranville It is hollow, but not intended to be "opperated" from inside. More Rocky-esqe Notwithstanding the fact I'm not a vent, I had the idea to use an animal of some sort (monkey perhaps) It would scoff at the idea of being able to read minds. I would say "Well I know what you're going to say next!" Triumphant smile from me. Monkey clamps his mouth tight. I say "Oh very funny. Well you think of a card and I'll read your mind" I write something down ask what his card was. He says "Seven of diamonds" I say "****!" Then go into something where the rabbit/monkey acurately reads a specs thoughts. Steve |

Steve, you'll want to look into Bill Abbott's Chico the Mindreading Chimp (based on an old Don Alan routine).

Steve,
Pardon me for saying so, but what you are describing sounds like something much more appropriate for a children's magic show (as is the Chico the Chimp routine) than for anyone who wishes to be taken seriously as a mentalist. Not that there is anything wrong with magic shows for children, if that's what you want to do. I just wouldn't consider it mentalism. Just my $0.02

Hmm. Some pretty hasty judments here.
The suitability of the rabbit depends entirely on you. Easiest would be a short comedy interlude that is not intended to be taken seriously. But comedy is a strange thing; if you hit on the right presentation, a rabbit puppet could be hilarious. If you could make it work for a seance or other serious presentation, I would be utterly amazed. John

Maybe some of you are right about the suitability re: too close to magic.
But If I say "The rabbit wants you to think of a card" they do so Then I say "The rabbit says it's the six of clubs" assuming it's correct aren't the audience going to think; How the hell did he know? Just the same as if I'd done it without the rabbit. Only now there's some fun as well. I realise that from now on anything I post about mentalism will have little credence, but I'm just thinking aloud really and using the Café as a sounding board. Steve |

I started very young and directly with genuine magick studies... and that later brought me to my interest in Mentalism. So, even if just for fun (maybe more for my fun than anyone else's) I also dabbled in inventing comedy magic tricks and effects. However I never performed them if not for close friends... It was more out of an intellectual need (and fun) than anything else. So, feel free to have these urges to try some comedy or some gag, but always know WHO you want to be as performing persona and HOW you want to be perceived. You need to establish a character and live that character (at least on stage). Having said all of that... About the rabbit... I still agree with Thomas and Dick.

Thanks for the wise words Mr Horses
Thanks for the strong words Mr Christian Thanks for the understanding words Mr Eisengrim I will take them all on board. I know it would have to be done exceptionally well in order to prove Paulo and Dick wrong. And though I may never follow up the initial idea I believe that it is possible without it being childish or farcical. I'll just let this thread slowly fade away now. Steve |

I have to agree that using the mental powers of a stuffed rabbit degradades (is that the word?) a possible strong peace of mentalism to a (most positive said) clever magic trick.
don't do it. You have a bigger and better brain than the rabbit. (you also have more space for brains, since you lost your wavy ginger hair ) Dutch Frank
Forgive me any language mistakes.

Forget the rabbit, make your character more fun if you want fun in your show.
Just a thought... |

And now I think about it.
What about Paulo Prince of Ponies. Am I the only one not allowed any animal associations. And before you say it There was no proof I ever had associations with animals and it was thrown out of court for lack of evidence. Anyway, you can never believe anything a chicken says. Steve |
