Thousands of items depicting African-Americans as monkey-like were in advertising copy, jelly jars, toys, games, dolls, and ceramics. The history is there. Look up pickaninny. See examples here: http://www.authentichistory.com/diversit......dex.html That iconography is so embedded into our culture that some well-meaning white people don't understand its origins. I did my near-Ph.D. in Theatre History researching minstrel shows in the US. The images in the posted picture are instantly recognizable to those familiar with that sort of thing. As I said, I don't think David intended to be anything more than light-hearted; but it's a very offensive picture.

My goodness! I thought those were supposed to be monkeys.
Kinda strange how I accused someone in another thread of being ignorant of racist language, when I myself was ignorant of racist imagery. Thanks, Landmark. I'm also sure that David meant no harm. Neither did I. |

In that case, Stoney your avatar is offensive.
Let's all play a game shall we? It's just like 7 steps to Kevin Bacon but instead it's 7 leaps to being gravely offended. Anybody up for a game?

Some people, like you, look at that picture and see some cute little monkeys.(Monkeys are cute btw) Others, like Landmark, look at the picture and see a group of African-Americans. The people who just see some cute little monkeys are racists. |

Hell, we're all monkey-like and that's a dam compliment. Part of the problem in the first place, I think, is that some humans think the opposite and seek division. Thanks again for the Magic Café. Have a nice day. I'm off to play Tybalt. Interpret as you will.

I meant to post it in another thread where someone is offended. Someone posted this before and it is perfect. Probably better it is here as in the other thread someone would have probably cried. But it fits here.

Outright offensive and inflammatory language should not be tolerated. But going out of your way to be offended is silly.

Not very magical, still... more fun than a barrow of monkeys (actually orangutans).
Anyone offended?

Lawrence O. has spent the most time helping me out.
Vinny, Bill, and Jon Townsend have been generous as well. A lot of my earlier work was helped by Deags. And Dick Oslund has even sent me instructions by traditional mail.
