I've lurked for several months now but decided to come out of my card case and say "hello"!
I was a working magician all through college (restaurants, private parties, trade shows) but put down my coins and cards when I graduated and got a real job. Thirteen years later I lost that job and dusted off my books and boxes of magic. Wow how I missed it. It is amazing how far close-up has come in my hiatus. You guys have been busy. I'm really impressed with the new material I see. Flourishers did not exist back then and I can't watch you guys enough. The unforgiving trend to visual magic kept on while I was gone. The magic I see now pops unlike anything I saw before. Some of my old favorites (Williamson, Lorayne, Sankey, Kenner) are still here. Some are not (Skinner, Kurtz). I'm reemployed but will keep my magic as a hobby this time. There was barely an internet when I was working before. I wish I had the Café, reviews and video teasers when I started magic. I'll be around. See you in a thread near you. |

Dear sushimonster,
Believe me, the changes in Magic over the years are just as shocking to many of us who were tuned in throughout. The changes for good and bad seem to come so fast I barley seem to notice a trend before it's a whole branch of interest or a big problem. The Café will definitely help you spot the latest trends in Magic faster. (I'm not saying I can keep up, I just know more about what's going on.) Have fun! - Mary Mowder |

Out of curiosity, what do you see as the more recent bad trends or "big problems"?

Exposure of methods one does not own on u-tube is a pain and a crime.
When someone creates an effect or DVD of a lifetime of effects only to be ripped off it makes the originators not want to share their magic and I don't blame them. Loss of brick and mortar Magic Shops is sad. People loose out on many of the mentoring and social aspects of magic when is all online. I love the Café but having a live friend or Magic Shop owner tell you a move needs help is a real wake up call and very helpful for an individual and Magic in general. Magic Shop owners provided a lot of guidance they were never paid for (both magically and socially). Thankfully there is still a Magic Shop here in Sacramento. What are your views on troubling trends? - Mary Mowder |

I agree.
Piracy always stinks. It is the double-edged sword of improved information flow. With the VCR we got access to so many great magic tapes. We also saw those same tapes copied and rented. The local shop here in NC use to rent tapes. Ick. I love YouTube. I love seeing "amateurs" all over the world showing their work. No need to wait to be discovered. Love new ways to get effects out to the community (either for free or for a fee) without depending on publishers. The dark side, of course, is the exposure. With the good comes the bad. I believe the exposure is not as damaging as we think. We are hypersensitive to exposure. We've always been. Did the masked magician end any careers? I love the online retailers and resources for seeing and reviewing products. A magician can do a ton of research now before making a purchase. I know this will increase the quality of what hits the market. It is tougher than ever to release crud and expect people to buy it. These online shops are killing the local shops. Not just in magic, but every hobby is losing their brick stores to cheaper online retailers. The shops that survive offer more than price to their customers. I hope brick stores get creative and offer more to justify their retail pricing. There is nothing that compares to an afternoon of coffee and magic sharing. You can't duplicate that online. |
