I performed at a banquet awards evening last night with my after-dinner mentalism performance. The organizer said that there would be "some" kids there but the true number ended up being about half of the 100 people in attendance. I rarely if ever have kids in my audience for these shows and here I had a group of 50 kids sitting in front of me on the floor.
Luckily I have 20+ years of entertaining children in my background so I was able to entertain both the kids and adults quite effectively and the organizer has been turned into a raving fan. I am curious: do you actively market or offer your mentalism show to family audiences? I do still have a solid kids show act that I'll bring out when requested and they have the budget. This is typically what I would sell for such a "family" type show but I admit they it focuses 95% on the kids and not so much for the adults. However, my mentalism performance went over really well and the adults were also very entertained. I was just curious what others do with such requests/opportunities. |

I don't think young children understand Mentalism. If you use a s***i to show that you predicted their two digit number, they arn't impressed; often they see through the methods in a way adults don't, or just don't care.

I pass them on as well. My performing style and character would have to be severely modified for these types of shows. I strive to create a certain mystique and it would be sacrificed by taking on those offers.

But if you perform Mobile Opener the kids WILL have phones.
Teens and above for mentalism especially in a stage show. But, if the event coordinator is a raving fan then you did the right thing. j |

I suppose there is a wide spectrum to these types of shows.
- some are definitely focused towards kids with clowns and cotton candy, etc.. The parents are just around for the ride. - some want the adults, teens, and children to all have a good time - some focus the event for the adults and the kids just happen to be around Last night's show was mostly for the adults (some came without kids) but they wanted the kids to enjoy themselves as well. It worked out well but I wouldn't consider selling this show to an event that wanted the emphasis on the kids. I did another banquet show earlier in the year where kids where in attendance. It was a company Christmas Party banquet. It was for the employees (it was most important to entertain the adults) but the employees were allowed to bring their kids. I got a testimonial from them raving about how great it was and how it was good "for all ages". This was unexpected as I avoid anything that looks like "magic" in my show and focus on mentalism (psychometry, Q&A, and the like). But, again, this was intended mostly for the adults but the kids seemed to get a kick out of it too. |

Then again, if you claim to spend you're life studying people's behavior and body language as a 'Psychological Illusionist' or Mentalist, then it hardly makes any sense for you also to be able to make an elephant vanish! Doesn't it kind of show that you're charecter (if you have one) is fake?

Kids above a certain age really love mentalism. Over eight and that material will go down very strongly. Couple it with a winning personality and an ability to get on the wavelength of kids (which you have, or your wouldn't have a strong kiddies act) and those on the border line of understanding and appreciating mentalism will be drawn in.
Occasionally I will get kids at my mentalism/hypnotism show. I will acknowledge them, do something small to get them laughing, then fairly much ignore them and let them enjoy the adult show. I will just be careful that the material is family rather than adult orientated, and there is no problems.

I have found mentalism for children is easy as long as you keep it simple and direct...and couple it with a clear, well-rehearsed script that reflects your character's attitude and persona. Treat the children as fairly as you would adults. By that I mean, talk TO them...not down to them. Children like anyone who treats them with more respect than they're used to. And, if they like you, you're home free. Hope this helps. Mick Ayres
