Okay so the news is all over the web about how Anderson Silva supposedly gave the worst fight in UFC history and Dana White is livid and the fans are turning away in droves and it's armageddon and blah, blah, blah.
I watched the fight. Anderson Silva simply dominated his opponent. Articles keep saying that he didn't do anything in the last three rounds. That is false. Silva landed several lightning fast punches and kicks even into the 5th round. Maia tried to get a hold of Silva and Silva slipped out of his grip every time. Anderson Silva did his job and kept his belt. Going into the fight, Anderson Silva said nice things about Maia as a fighter. After the fight, Anderson Silva said Maia threw some good shots. Now Dana White says he's "never been so embarrassed by a fighter." This means he wasn't as embarrassed when Tito Ortiz flipped off Ken Shamrock after beating him into retirement, while Shamrock had his hand out to shake Tito's. And Dana White wasn't this embarrassed by Brock Lesnar's antics after his fight with Frank Mir. So a fighter dominating his opponent and still saying repectful things about that opponent is more embarrasing than both of those guys. Now Dana White is talking about punishing Anderson Silva, who didn't break any rules or flip anybody off or anything nearly so obnoxious. What a bunch of crap.

I think it is more Dana White publicity. Like him fighting Tito, and so forth.
If he didn't punish Lesner for his little outburst, there ya go. Ratings and popularity for UFC have gone up up up for a while now. I wonder if he is trying to get momentum or some such ploy. Everything he ever does is calculated to get ratings.

I agree. I think his plot is to try to get the fans hating Anderson Silva so that whenever he does fight GSP or a heavyweight then more people will tune in hoping to see Silva lose. I also think that Dana White knows that Anderson Silva would mop the floor with GSP and GSP sells more tickets.

White sure knows business and how to sell. BUT I wonder if they are reaching a point of over saturation?

I don't know much about what's going on in the MMA world right now. Especially the UFC. It's a strange time.
BJ Penn gets beat by a relative unknown, Brock Lesnar is healed and coming back but there's an interim belt anyway, Then there's the Silva business. The one thing I am excited about is this season of The Ultimate Fighter. I don't care how old they get, I will never get sick of Chuck making Tito his bee-yotch. Another bonus, nobody is bidding on Anderson Silva stuff on eBay. Buy low, sell high!

Unfortunately it's been revealed that Rich Franklin is taking over for Tito which kind of sucks.
I was looking forward to seeing Chuck and Tito bang it out. |

On UFC 115. Apparently something happened on TUF that caused Tito to not be able to fight at 115. Of course, Dana White won't say what it was because he wants people to watch TUF. I hope he got in Chuck's face and got his jaw broken, not to cause him pain but to shut him up.
Well, I can dream.

Crap?
That was a debut UFC event in The United Arab Emirates. In a stadium built for that event. How can you say that first impressions aren't a factor? Round One. Really you had them circling each other for the whole round, throwing faints. Maia going for two failed take downs. Silva standing still for at least 5 seconds, taking a Runner's Pose from Yoga for at least another 5, running round Maia waving his arms around like he's just randomly flailing them around. With less about 6 to 8 strikes thrown TOTAL. Round Two. This had a little more action, but so much more taunting and showboating by Silva. Silva spent at least half the round with his arms at his sides. Primarily landed some jabs, at will, and leg kicks, at will. At least more than 10, this round. Silva hanging his arms down, leaning his head over/towards Maia, then throwing a sloppy high kick. Then Silva starts doing that basic side to side capoeira move. And seems to be frustrated Maia is acting so much to his faints. A couple failed take down attempts by Maia. And Silva jogs away from Maia as he's getting up. A failed take down attempt by Maia, and Silva is visibly upset at it. Looking at Maia, banging his fists together, challenging him. and continues to do this, punching his own chin, taunting Maia. All his his arms at his sides. Probably does this for a minute or just under. Round Three. Had the least amount of taunting by Silva I suppose. Could chalk half of it to bobbing and weaving, only far more than the degree needed. Still some running away as Maia gets up after a fail take down attempt. Probably the most strikes thrown. Jabs, front kicks to the leg, a spinning back kick. A few 1 2 combos, by Silva. And just a few jabs and a combo by Maia, plus a failed TDA. Round Four. Maia lands probably one of his more harder blows, and overhand left. Connected, but didn't phase Silva much. And a jab by Silva after. Crowd is booing at this point. More circling and fainting. Maia swings and misses with a 1 2 combo. A front kick by Silva, more circling. Crowd booing and now cheering for Maia. Half way through a jab landed by Maia, and a couple jabs and a right by Silva. Crowd clearly chanting for Maia now. Some jazz hands and a leg kick by Silva at 2 min mark. Faints. Rogan comments that someone just "screamed 'Attack!'" 1:30 marks Crowd starts Chanting "GSP!" who is sitting in the crowd watching the fight... Silva circling and side shuffling and the ref tells them to get busy at 1:20. More circling and shuffling by Silva then a jab lands at 1:15. Circle and side shuffle by Silva until 0:35, when Maia gestures with his arms out as if saying "Well?" More chants for Maia, Silva circling and side shuffling. More action than round 1, less than round 2. Maia's eye swells shut cause at some point during round 4 he blew his nose, while having a broken nose. Round 5. Maia lands a jab, Silva lands a left in response. Missed high kick by silva at 4:30. Then a failed tda by maia. More circling and faints. Maia, lands hsi best combo lunging in for a jab, left, right hook. Couple overhand lefts clip Silva backing him into the fence, and a tda by Maia. Which Silva avoids. Then Maia lands 4 or 5 shots from his knees to Silva as Silva stood up and away from the tda at 3:20. Crowd chanting Maia, as he misses and overland left. pawing jabs and a spinning back kick by Silva, don't do much. 2:45, still chanting Maia. Joe suggesting Silva may be tired. Silva standing straight up walking around, circling Maia until 2:20. Ref tells them to get busy. Maia shoots for a tda, and gets a hold of Silva's leg. Then backs him into the cage. Maia drops for a leg lock, and Silva escapes at 2:00. Silva circling and side shuffling and even running around the octagon until 1:20. Dives in for a 1 2 combo on Maia. From 1:00 to :50 Silva circling, side shuffling and jogging around Maia. Ref calls a Time Out, gives Silva a warning, saying he'll take away a point if he keeps running away/around the octagon. Pawing jabs/faints. A missed overhand left and right hook by Maia. Couple jabs by Silva. Another missed overhand left by Maia at :10 mark. After the round and the winner announced Silva gets on his knees in front of Maia and bows. Joe asks his question. Silva says Maia's striking surprised him. he's sorry about his performance. he doesn't know what got into him. says it was "ring rust" ect. ect. This was the VERY FIRST TIME I have seen where Dana White DIDN'T put the belt on the winner OR were the scores announced by Bruce Buffer. He just said, Winner by UD Anderson Silva. Dana wasn't even in the octagon. And apparently he walked on of the arena, on the fight. Dana White walked out on the fight! He said he handed the belt to Silva's manager and told him to give it to him. Now Maia is a replacement for a replacement. Vitor Belfort had to pull out due to injury. And a wrestler Chael Sonnen, I guess couldn't be medically cleared to fight so soon after his last. Again the debut UFC event in The United Arab Emirates. In a stadium built for that event. And Anderson Silva, The Middleweight Champion, who you would expect to act like one. Clowns around for 25 minutes, wasting everyones time. Like Dana said in the press conference, a man that talented if he can, go in there and be Mike Tyson. Finish it in 2 minutes. He said he'd rather have people say "Let's not buy the Silva fight, he KOs people in 2 minutes." rather than "Lets not buy the Silva fight, cause he just runs around the octagon for 5 rounds." "So a fighter dominating his opponent and still saying repectful things about that opponent is more embarrasing than both of those guys." There was nothing respectful about Silva's performance during the fight. Dominating... sure... I guess... He never really got hit. And his Maia whenever he seemed to chose. Dominating fights I have seen are usually more entertaining. I tend to think of dominance more along the lines of GSP vs. Hardy/Serra2/Alves. Penn vs. Sanchez/Florian/Sherk/Stevenson. Couture vs. Sylvia/Gonzaga/Coleman/Liddell1/Ortiz. Franklin vs. Hamill/MacDonald/Loiseau (he was NEVER the same after that fight). Hendo vs. Bisping ect. ect. And Edgar isn't a relative unknown.

I think Silva put it best, his job is to win fights and he does his job well.
Just because some people don't like the method he used he still accomplished his job. You don't punish a fighter for winning fights, no matter how they do it. He did his job. People are saying he should be punished. He didn't break any rules. Show me a rule in the UFC that says that a fighter has to win in the most entertaining way to the spectators? That would be WWE, not UFC. If Dana White starts telling fighters how to fight and punishing them for not putting on a good "performance" then it will make UFC as fake as wrasslin' and that is the opposite of what UFC should be. The Gracies started the UFC to find the best fighter (well, to promote their school, but the public reason was to find the best fighter) Anderson Silva was the best fighter in that match. Mission accomplished.

There is a difference between winning fights and acting like a jacka**, especially when you're the champion of your weight class. You have to set an example of how a champion should act.
You paid for that PPV and you were happy with your purchase? Cause there are a boat load of people who weren't on actual forums directed at MMA. So if all he did was just run away from Maia, never throwing a single strike, like Kalib Starnes vs. Nate Quarry, but in the last minute of the 5th round, KOs Maia with a vicious combo or a spinning backfist or something like that, it'd still be fine with you? This wasn't anything like Rashad doing his weird shoulder roll, head movement, kind of showboating. This is 3/5 rounds of Silva just throwing faints, circling and side shuffling around Maia. "Timidity, including, without limitation, avoiding contact with an opponent, intentionally or consistently dropping the mouthpiece or faking an injury" I'd say that counts. Same with "Using abusive language in the ring or fenced area" Granted it was in Portuguese. You saying "He won, who cares how he did it." reminds me of the whole Tim Sylvia issue. With Couture saying that Tim "Doesn't fight to win, he fights to not lose." And there is a difference. And this isn't the first time this happened. UFC 90 Patrick Cote. Clowing around, not to as much a degree. UFC 97 Thales Leites. More of the same. Seemed Silva was trying to make it look like it was Leites' fault for not engaging. This time was the worst of them all. His actions keep getting more and more... asinine.

Well, yeah. I was happy with it. I enjoyed the fight. I thought Silva fought a smart fight. Maybe not a brutal fight in the last two rounds, but a smart one. I don't think he was timid at all. He ducked in and popped Maia at will. When Maia tried to grab him in round 5 he slipped out of it every time, expertly. I was very impressed with that. So, yeah I liked it.
You don't have to like it. You don't have to like Silva. I don't like Brock Lesnar, but I've never talked about stripping him of the title because he earned it by winning fights. He spouts off like a jack*** and gives martial arts a bad name, but he won that belt. So when people say that Silva should be stripped of the belt, they seem like much bigger jack***es to me. If they want that belt then I suggest they get in the ring and try to take it.

So you'd rather see Silva just goof off for five rounds? Popping in and out with a handful lightning quick strikes each round for a UD win, rather than T/KO someone like he did James Irvin, Rich Franklin 1/2, or Marquardt?
Personally I wouldn't call that fight smart. Smart to me is what Edgar did to Penn. Or how Shogun handled Lyoto the first time. Or how Lyoto fights in general. I wasn't really saying he was timid, more along the lines of both of them avoiding contact. I do like/d Silva. Although probably 2 1/2 out of his last 5 fights. 1 for Irvin and Griffin. And the 1/2 for Cote. Leites and Maia, was a waste of time IMO. Well I haven't heard anything about belt stripping, other than youtube comments or those sherdog folk.

Ah, the armchair referees are having their fun.
First rule of combat: Never underestimate your opponent. Fighting may be a sport, but it is not a game. Silva doesn't train 50 hours per week and hold several rankings and titles for nothing. If he senses something in the other guy worthy of caution, then so be it. A death by a thousand cuts is still a victory. If White doesn't like it, then White can always challenge Silva in the ring, can't he? |

My girlfriend was so mad when we got the PPV of Silva's first fight and it was over in less than a minute. I understand that Dana White would rather someone score a quick knockout than to toy with their opponent and never knock them out but personally I enjoyed the show.
In the end though, it doesn't matter what anybodies opinions are, only that he won. He's the champ and I can't see that changing any time soon.
