I have a problem with my Dean's Sh**l Set.
First when a coin is nested in the sh**l I can move the coin around in it and so it makes a little bit of noise (that wasn't in the beginning). Next when a coin is nested and I press down on one side it lifts up on the other. And so there is no way for me doing a coinroll with the sh**l plus coin. And last: is there a way to make my coins "older"? I want them to look more worn.b Because I bought a Fl***er coin and it is very bright and so it doesn't fit my other coins, I also want my other coins to look much more worn and older. Many Thanks Matthew

Nope.....just an old-lady Magician that likes to find new things and try them. My bottle of patina-gel arrived yesterday. I'm going to play with it today. Now where's that stack of English pennies that I have? :o)
dsalley13 PS: This stuff will last me forever. You only use 2-3 drops of it per cup of water, in order to make your dipping/working solution. I'll post the results if anybody wants to see the before/after pix. |

Absolutely!
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I had to work today and the Mom & Pop grocery I went to on the way home had no ammonia at all. I'll go to a big market tomorrow. I'm just going to use sudsy ammonia instead of ammonia and dish soap separately bottled and then mixed.
I'll post the pix in this thread tomorrow night. I don't know what category it could go to as an independent post anyway. Oh man does it smell!!! I opened the bottle and about gagged! I'll use it on the porch, not in the house. dsalley13 |

I have used this variety. It doesn't work well on silver. It makes a rather rainbow color rather than a nice dark patina, like an oil slick. It works ok on copper, but not as well as others. I'd use a straight liver of sulpher over this product on your copper coins.

The reason the shells are teetering on each other is because the shell has bubbled ...either upwards, and the shell above is rocking...or inward, and the shell or coin below is rocking. A classic symptom of Jamie's shells that I have seen repeatedly.
It was explained to me that this bubbling effects the fit of the coins too. If the face of the shell bubbles upwards, the edges of the shell at the mouth will naturally bend inwards, causing the shell to hang up. In this case you push DOWN on the face of the shell. If the shell of the coin bubbles inward, the mouth of the shell flares outwards, causing a loose fit. In this case you would push the bubble outward from inside the shell. These considerations are assuming the shell fit correctly from the git go. If it was already bubbled right out of the box, all bets are off. A great way to avoid these problems altogether, is to be patient and buy your coins from the guy I get mine from. These will be rigid and flat when your grandkids are doing 3 fly. |

I don't want to ask Jammy anything because he is so negligent. He always needs several days to reply on an e-mail etc and that really sucks.
My sh**l bubbles down, so how should I press down on it and with what? Because I don't want to destroy the shell either any coin. But thanks to polygonsmagic and NYVetteGuy I will try your suggestions out this evening. By the way where do you purchase your coins polygonsmagic? Another problem I have to solve with my coins is: If they fall down to a hard surface they will get a cut. I don't know how to describe it better so I will upload a foto. http://picasaweb.google.com/111379775638......52282722 How can I fix that??

Ahh, life with shells. The photo damage looks to me like more of a dent than a cut. Once a shell is damaged beyond your ability to fix it you pretty much have to send it back to the maker and have them see if they can fix it. One of the biggest drawbacks of buying expensive silver gaffs (especially shells)is that it is usually unwise to use them in a situation where they can fall onto a hard surface. I have learned this the hard way. It isn't that big a deal to replace a $40.00 gaff, but a $200.00 gaff? Ouch!

Sammy you are right, that really hurts.
But thanks god the damage is on the coins not on the shell so it isn't that worse. But it really doesn't look good and I want to repair it if that's possible.

Hi Matt,
I guess I didn't look at the photo close enough. I thought it was the shell that was damaged. If it was an exp**ded set, you could go to a coin dealer to find a replacement. Since it's a Dean's Set, you will probably have to have Jammie make a replacement coin. From what I understand, he keeps detailed specifications on every set he ships. If you are the original owner (or know who is) he may be able to remill a replacement for you without having the shell. Best of luck to you! I hope you get your set back to performance level soon. Loren Wade can give you some ideas on aging the coins. He helped me understand the process and I had great success in aging my 3CM set. Good old Clorox bleach can work miracles in the coloring process. Here's a photo of my 3CM set after bleaching. Click Here Here's the back side. Click Here Also thanks to Loren for teaching this old man how to link the Café to photos! Cheers! Sammy

Sammy, your set looks great. I purchased a bottle of Nic-A-Tone to try to darken my copper coins. Have not tried it yet. Is it possible to contact the gentleman that helped you with the aging of your coins? Thanks
