I have seen professional magicians, clowns, jugglers, ventriloquists, but NEVER have I seen a professional yoer. Do people even know that you can do tricks with yo-yos? How popular are they these days?

Here are just a few Yo-yo guys who pretty much make their living as Yo-Yo performers. They do other stuff, but it is their Yo-yo skills that they market the most. I am sure that there are many others, these are just the first 2 that immediately come to mind. Have you been to or attended a Yo-yo competition lately. They are constantly creating new tricks and coming up with new variations. Never been a Yo-Yo person myself, but there seem to be more and more of them that are associating with us jugglers and our conventions, which IMHO is a good thing.

I have seen these yo yo champions at work, and although they are amazing, if that is all that you do for a living it must be very hard to get work.

Duncan still has their crew of professional yo-yoers. I have a friend who was doing some consulting for them, and according to him, the yo-yo is making another comeback (the last major one being about 10 years ago.)

I am an old yo-yo guy as well as an old magician. I usually throw in a few yo-yo tricks with my magic performances. I'll be 73 in June and I am the world's oldest member of a yo-yo company team. The company teams are usually teenage champions...and me.
Here's a funny little video of me doing a couple of yo-yo tricks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKQoy7KNkKw Best regards, Glenn Godsey |

BTW, I forgot to mention that Jim Cellini strongly suggested that I go on the road with a yo-yo street performance many years ago. He thought that it would be great on the streets.

Guy Heathcote here in the UK is probably the best known yoer. He also does Kendama. Back in the day he was one of the first modern jugglers to experiment with Diabolo. He was the first westerner I ever saw do tricks with 3 diabolos on one string. This was back in 1995.
He was also an amazing devil stick player around the same time. He then seemed to vanish from the scene and came back kicking ass with yoyo. His website gives more info... http://www.guyheathcote.com Unknown to Guy he's always been a bit of a hero of mine. He was at the first ever juggling convention I went to and he ran diabolo and devil stick workshops. Before either of those I couldn't do anything on a diabolo or devil stick. So, anyway, I guess you could call Guy a proyoyoer.

Okay, so there are a few professional yoers. Now my question is, do any of you (aside from Glenn) use yo-yos at all?

I do for recreation. Not for shows and I'm not really that good at it. But I do enjoy playing with it. I use a Henrys Viper personnally. I don't know if that's cheating. If you've not used one they're kind of like a really small squashed diabolo, only with the string attached.

Matt Hall does Kendama (among a lot of other teqniques - I have to admit I did prefer watching his diabolo or juggling or cigar boxes or breakdance skills
Personally I do not see much entertainment value in watching Kendama. But probably is a matter of taste. Other people seem to enjoy watching it. While googeling I found this website http://www.kendama.tlmb.net/EKO2008review.html but you probably already found it by googling yourself By the way I don't do yoyo nor kendama. |

I don't think the Kendama was meant to entertain others. It's like hackey sack or am I way off?

I would say that most definitely it was not created for performing or for "entertainment" purposes.

Ah OK that was what I thought when I watched it but others seemed to be entertained so I thought it might be just me
