First, I am not a rope worker so I am looking for some opinions. Please feel free to reference books or videos so I can research further.
Do you experienced rope workers feel that pulling the ends off the rope and leaving a "continuous circle" of rope in the middle of a cut and restored rope routine hints to possible method? or is the magic so strong it negates this possibility? If I am using a gaffed rope, can you reference some handlings to set-up for the cut and restored moment? I have seen this one (Tabary's?) where you hold up the opposite end, mesuring off a certain length, then switiching the ends. I thought it looks odd. is there another method, or do I need not worry about it 'cause it goes by the audience? thanks in advance. s |

Cut and restore is a very simple trick, and after doing it for a year or two I got tired of it. I then witnessed Jimmy Ray perform this trick, and it has been my finally trick of my show ever since.
It is a very strong trick, and does not need any dressing up. I like to get a prominent member of the audience up to help me (usually an older woman) and I just tease the hell out of them (in good taste).

Any source (written or video) of the Jimmy Ray cut & restored routine?

IMHO almost any rope trick kills, unless you make it too complex and hard-to-follow.

No Jimmy was a performer, and not one who published his material, but his style was much like Michael Finny is today. Jimmy is blind now and occasionally I see him at a local magic meeting. I feel lucky to be booked at the same church carnival 20 years ago when I saw Jimmy do his cut and restore on the back of a flatbed truck in a South Jersey church parking lot.

The Sponge, don't understand your question after reading it several times, I think there is to many ideas not fully expressed.
If you want just a good cut & restored rope trick, this is in any beginner book on magic. The instructions come with a hank of rope if purchased by the manufacturer Empire Magic. This is also the basic method used in the Sterling Short & Long Cut and Restored Rope Trick. If you are looking for something entertaining and funny, get the Sterling Short & Long Comedy Cut & Restored Rope Trick, Abbott's Magic Co. sells just the instructions for this one effect. If you like the circle idea by removing the ends, then get Daryl's Rope Routine on one of his Rope DVDs or the Sandsational Rope book which Daryl's routine is built on using many of the moves. |

Good advice. Also you could buy the Encyclopedia of Rope tricks (books). Or my humble book, "Give a Magician Enough Rope." from http://www.petebiro.com

I bought a three phase routine that uses a gaffed rope. 1st phase is cut and restore. the "get ready" involves holding one end up then switching the ends. seems a little strange to me, but perhaps I am worried about something for nothing. second phase "pulls the ends off the rope leaveing a continuous circle of rope." I am afraid this might point to the cut and restored method. I guess I was looking for either some reassurance or opinions to scrap this routine and look elsewhere. s |

Hi the Sponge,
Your concern falls into the same category as "does using 'finger scissors' give away some of the secret?" There is a recent thread discussing the finger scissors you might want to read: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......rum=9&37 Personally, I use the finger scissors and the "endless loop" of rope in one of my routines. Audience reactions suggest they find both moves surprising and amazing. I would not dismiss either move out-of-hand just because you think your audience may figure out what you are doing. I believe it depends on how you present the moves within the context of your routine. Regards, Steve

Sounds like you have the "Instanto Rope" Trick or as in Great Britain and the late Pate Page call it the "Everlasting Rope Trick". This trick uses m****ts, correct?
Then the answer to your question is, yes they do not notice it if handled as instructed. This same move is used without the gimmick and is credited to Slydini, Sands, Daryl to name a few famous performers. Could you give us the name of the effect you are speaking of, that in your position? |

I don't use the finger scissors move, but for my style, I would think BITING the rope in two would be worth trying. For my presentation of the Neff Miracle Rope, I "PULL" THE ROPE INTO TWO PIECES.

The pulling the ends off/continuous loop is used by a lot of pro's in their rope routines. Fear not!

I use the move in one of my routines, but I prefer that the audience remains unaware that there is a short rope.
