The subject line refers to a prediction trick invented by Clayton Rawson, I believe. If you write the Jo part in standard script, the whole line will look like 8 of spades when you hold the nine characters in front of a mirror. I patter that magicians use the formula to determine the name of a card "freely" selected by a spectator. I sometimes have two cards selected, one freely and the 8S forced. I use a key card to reveal the first card and then have the spectator who chose the 8S either hold the formula up to a mirror or hold the paper up to a strong light so the formula can be read backwards that way.
Clayton Rawson invented some great tricks. He wrote a book for the lay public called _How to Entertain Children With Magic You Can Do." ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez
