Hello every one,
First off thank you to every one for the help in the ideas for putting together a magic show for children. On April 9th I did my first show. I preformed 2 shows back to back for different aged children. First show was children 4 and under second show was 4 to 8 years (the audience I was targeting) Second show went better than the first, but both was a good show. The kids loved it and had a good time as well as I did. I was sad when it was over and wanted to do another show. I created my website and hope to get some reviews of it from all of you good, bad or both. http://www.UngawaMagic.com Ungawa is the magic word I have the children say to make the "magic" happen. Thanks again every one. Brent P.S. On the contact page the email is wrong but the feedback form works great. |

Good job Brent! Now you're hooked. Finish your website and include a couple of photos and you'll be good to go.

You might also see if you can mute the background. All those colored circles behind the white text-on-blue-on-screaming yellow is hard on old eyes! Check here for the CSS on adjusting the opacity / transparency of your background image:

Ed, How is it now on the eyes? http://www.UngawaMagic.com I also updated a bunch of stuff, and added a FAQ's page so now you can find out what Ungawa is.

Hi Brent- I am not sure why you would want google ads on your site which would potentially put them on another magician's website?

Truthfully I don't like the site
It hurts my eyes and doesn't look professional The google adwords could cost you bookings Maybe tone it down a bit, consider different navigation

I concur.
I'm not a "childrens magic" kind of guy, so I'm not the audience you're trying to attract. That having been said, in order to stick with something close to the design you have, I'd mute the colors a bit. All those bright colors clashing with one another will, at worst, be painful to look at, and will probably at least serve as a distraction. Definitely scrap the ads. If I'm looking for a performer, I want someone who makes his living performing and doesn't need to subsidize it with ad space on his website. It may not be a deal-breaker, but if I'm looking at two performers who seem otherwise equal, I'm going for the one without the ads (the logic being, he's doing something better because he can afford to live on his work alone). It may not be fair, but it is business. On your "services" page, you mention the possibility of pro-bono work. Scrap it. It sends the message that you don't value your services and are willing to work for peanuts and cheese. Sure, you can do charity shows pro-bono, and that's respectable. But those are deals that are worked out privately, not something offered as a service to the public on your website.

Brent,
Agree with much of what has been said. Get rid of the ballon background -- go with a solid, muted background that will let your message stand out. Less is more. Check out Apple, Coke, other major marketing websites; note that the color / pictures draw you to key messages, while the background is not even noticeable. As mentioned, a few photos of your show would be a great touch. Good luck! |

What I was trying to achieve was something like this http://www.sillybillymagic.com/SillyBilly.html
I am trying to convey that I am a children magician for children and I want my website to reflect that. But as one of you said maybe less is more. Any ideas on the color that I should use? How is the header? the navigation? What color for the background? |

I suggest that your background should be of a single color. White or light colors should be alright. If you find that too dull, you can include a mild vertical gradient effect. Anything more and your background will tend to stand out which shouldn't be the case.
Also, try to visit a few random kids sites, take note of those sites that you think are more professional and observe how they layout their sites. Most importantly, include large pictures of you performing to kids on your homepage. One glance at the pictures and any visitors will immediately identify you as a children magician without reading anything. Just like how apple promotes their item by using a gigantic picture that covers the whole page instead of 3 paragraphs of description texts. Capture their attention and convey your message fast. If people are interested, they will click on the rest of the links to find out more. that's just my two cents. Good luck! - Andrew

I agree whole-heartedly with What Robert said about the pro bono work. Take it out. It makes you look like an amateur when the whole point of the site is to make you look like a professional. The ads also contribute to the amateur feeling as well as the unprofessional color scheme which have both already been mentioned but just reiterating those points as well.

"Ungawa" is a word first coined by Edgar Rice Burroughs and used in his creation of "Tarzan of the Apes". Originally Mr. Burroughs used it as a multi-use word that Tarzan said when he was communicating to the jungle animals, usually demanding their obeyance. Burroughs made up an entire ape language (Mangani, or the language of the great apes) although very little of it made it from the novels to the popular movies starring Tarzan in the early 1900's (Elmo Lincoln as Tarzan in the silent film era) to Johnny Weissmuller and others in the early 1930's and later.
