OK, this is going to be an unusual question but I'm just looking for opinion here.
I've been booked to perform at a picnic for teens that have the Cochlear Implant like I have. First they asked if I could design the T-shirt for the event. They thought it would be nice to be able to say "This shirt was designed by a cochlear Implant recipient". Then I said "How about the entertainment for the event also has a cochlear implant? So I'm going to put on a show for them too. Anyway, I have this wild idea for it. First of all I, and everyone who has the cochlear implant, has a magnet embedded in the side of our head. The magnet is used to hold the external sound processor in place. So I came up with this trick where I secretly ditch an object there. You know like some of the moves with a cigarette or a pencil where you secretly load it behind your ear. Well, I was thinking it might be fun to teach these teens how to do that. To take something small like a bottle cap and make it disappear by sticking it to the magnet. Something simple. I'm wondering what you all think about the idea on the issue of exposure. It's not like this is something everyone can do. For not everyone has a magnet embedded in their skull. I don't know if I'll do this. It's just a wild idea and I thought might find it neat and humorous. To be able to do something because of their implant that others can't do. Keep in mind this is for teens. Ron Jaxon |

That's probably something many of them have already tried, or at least considered. Kids will be kids.

I think it would be great. Don't worry about exposure. Look at what Copperfield did with Project Magic. You are not exposing, you are teaching them a trick they can do that will give them self-confidence and help them re-frame their understanding of themselves.

Not exposure, and the great thng about the magnet idea is they will have someting special they can do that no else can do in the same way.

Elbow, knee and neck? ... no shirt required?
How about that pen vanish folks do - but you can use the magnet rather than your ear and so use a bottlecap? Get creative. make it something they will enjoy doing for others.

Yes Cool
Apart from that I just trying think of card trick that relates to sound all I can think of is that I know a full deck false shuffle which is based on hearing more or less; Shaking Cards in a Hat. And I was thinking that, Dead Mans Hand -Henry Christ- goes with a bang! Could be done using that shuffle I think. What I mean is this trick would not work with people who were deaf but you could do it for them now they have hearing because they have the implants now.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I agree it's a great idea. I really liked this comment from Whit: "you are teaching them a trick they can do that will give them self-confidence and help them re-frame their understanding of themselves."
Great idea!

Already in 1942, in Bull's-eye Coin trick, Ed Marlo described routines hiding a penny or a dime in the ear. Maybe you could teach them a trick using the Cochlear Implant as an admitted method and then misdirect them (to leave them wanting more) with a dime and penny along Marlo's technique? Not only copper is not magnetic, not only it doesn't disclose the dime and penny gimmick but it would leave them with a great entertaining moment and a magical type of dilemma.
Sharing the joy cannot be wrong and adapting magic to make it meaningful to an audience is certainly right. Furthermore most magicians don't benefit from such a Hold Out so you are not disclosing anything. Give them the magical time of their life: that's what counts.

Ron,
I think it is a great idea! I was thinking about something like that for Michael when he gets older. I also concur with Whit's comment. How have you been? Michael got his N5 2-weeks ago. If you can PM me and I'll fill you in. Jay |
