Hey guys,
Several of you have messaged me, or written here, with questions, so it’s time to play the question and answer game (the guy who comes up with the game names was on holiday)! Q: When is the book actually coming out? A: I’ve spoken with Tyler and he’s told me that the book is still at the printers. He’s worked so hard on making the book look as good as possible (wait until you see the production values!) that he didn’t want it to end up as a rushed job. In fact, the book looks so good that the printers have asked to keep a few extra copies to show future clients! But that was the long answer. The short one is: "soon". Q: How difficult is the material in the book? A: While there are quite a few tricks I would deem “easy”, the truth is that the majority of the material does require a certain comfort level with the props used (cards, coins, spectator’s tongue, etc.). Tyler’s choices for techniques have nothing to do with difficulty level and everything to do with what fits the context of the routine (be it sleight, gaff, spectator’s tongue, etc.). In other words, iff a moment is best served with a pass he doesn’t tell you to do a double undercut simply because it’s “more accessible.” Q: How big is the book? A: Big. Really big. Weighing in at a whopping 200 pages with more then 20 unique items, including material with cards, coins, envelopes, and more, there is something for everyone- and by everyone I mean people who perform magic in a close-up or parlour setting and have an interest in adding some new and fun things to their repertoire. Q: How much of the book is dedicated to card tricks? A: While the majority of the book is dedicated to Tyler’s new card work, about 25% of the items don’t actually use cards, so there is still some variety. But the truth is this book will appeal more to people who like card work. Q: What’s my favourite thing in the book? A: Depends. I love “Inspector Gadget” (which I reviewed above) and that spelling trick is awesome, but I think my favourite thing about the book is that Tyler explains and justifies why he uses certain moves, or presentations, and the result is that even if you never try the tricks you will learn something awesome. Book and DVD releases these days tend to fall into one of two categories: derivative or foundational. Much of the material being published now falls into the derivative category. The creator will take an existing trick, substitute a top change for a double lift or a dribble force for a riffle force and then publish it. This isn’t a criticism – sometimes small changes DO make big differences – but an issue does arise. You, as a student, typically don’t know why the creator changed the sleight. Was it for angle issues? Was it because the original sleight was too hard for him? Was it because his mother hates him? So if you come along and read the trick, deciding to swap the top change for, say, a slip jog, then you’ve lost literally EVERYTHING of value that the creator added to the trick; you’re left with the core original framework that he based his variation on (which you probably already have in your library, several times over). Material found in the foundational category is different. This is material built on very solid ground. Whether the creator is solving a problem or formulating a new plot or whatnot, he introduces new ideas, concepts, and/or approaches. This means that if you swap out a technique for one that suits you better, you still retain the core value of the material; you don’t lose the lesson. The material Tyler chose to include in Reinventing The Real is his attempt at giving us something on the foundational level. Although he chose the techniques he did for very specific reasons (which he explains) you can still swap in some easier ones without sacrificing much of the overall picture (which is what we’re all after). Q: What would someone like Stephen Minch say about the book? A: Ok- no one asked me that but I know some of you were wondering it. So wonder no more! “Reinventing The Real is the best and most exciting book on close-up magic I’ve read in a long time. In it Tyler Wilson shows himself wonderfully inventive, a serious student of his craft and very funny. The only fault this book has is that I’m not publishing it.”—Stephen Minch I hope that helps guys! Ben
